Waya is a thirteen-year-old boy in the United States. He’s not a typical American
teenager as he was born and raised in the Cherokee Nation, one of the largest
native American tribes in the USA. There are many customs and traditions in

his tribe, and he always tries to honour them. He's also learning the Cherokee
language, his native tongue with only a few thousand speakers left. However,
he wants to interact more with people outside his tribe. His plan for next fall is
to attend a public school. Sharing his experience as a native teenager is
important as he wants the outside world to understand more about his culture
and way of life. In turn, he hopes to bring back new knowledge and improve life
in his own community.
