ESSAY #2 Compare and Contrast (100 POINTS)

INSTRUCTION: Write a Compare and Contrast essay using a topic of your choice with a minimum of 750 words. You
must use at least one source and cite it properly in this essay. A Compare and Contrast essay examines two or more
topics, comparing their similarities and contrasting differences. You must type your paper and save it as a Word
Document or a PDF. You must submit your essay to the appropriate location in your Canvas class shell by the due date.
NO EMAILED OR HAND-DELIVERED PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. You must follow the grading rubric as
shown below.

 Entire paper is double-spaced with 1” margins.
 12pt font, New Times Roman.
 Page numbers with the student’s last name are on the top
right of each page.
 Name, Professor, Class, and Date are on the first page, left

 Title centered above first paragraph/Subtitles and headings
are in the appropriate place.
WORKS CITED PAGE Possible 20 Points
 Page is titled “Works Cited” and is centered.
 References are alphabetical.
 Minimum of one secondary source.
 Sources listed are cited at least one time within the body of
the paper.
 References include all information required for MLA style.
 Punctuation and capitalization are correct.
 Hanging indent is used for entries longer than one line.
INTRODUCTION Possible 10 Points
 Engaging intro that gains attention.
 Clearly states the main idea of the paper.
 Includes a thesis statement.
BODY/ORGANIZATION Possible 20 Points
 Effectively compares/contrasts two topics.
 Well-structured supporting paragraphs with a topic sentence.
 Uses strong details and descriptions to help the reader
understand.
 Experience/evidence supports the thesis.
CONCLUSION Possible 10 Points
 Wraps up the paper’s main ideas without restating them
verbatim.
MINIMUM LENGTH OF 750 WORDS Possible 10 Points
PARAGRAPH ORGANIZATION Possible 5 Points
 Paragraphs are logically organized.
 Transitions between and within paragraphs are smooth.
GRAMMAR & LANGUAGE Possible 5 Points
 No run-ons, fragments, or spelling errors.
 Correct capitalization and punctuation.
 Vivid and descriptive language.
 Free of slang, contractions, or text speak.
