UNIT 1

UNIT 2
1. What are the quantities whose base values are required to represent
the power system by reactance diagram.
2. The generator emf is 1 p.u and the subtransient reactance is 20%. Find
the subtransient currents.
3. List out the advantages of p.u systems.
4. A transformer is rated at 11KV/0.4KV , 500KVA, 5.2% reactance.
Determine the S.C MVA of the transformer when it is connected to
infinite bus.
5. What is the need of base value.
6. Derive the expression for (i) base impedance ZB (ii) base current IB (iii)per
unit impedance Zp.u for a given base mega volt ampere MVAB , base
kilovolts KVB .
7. Explain about per unit representation of transformer and draw per unit
equivalent circuit with necessary equations. Prove that the per unit
impedance of transformer is same when computed from primary side or
secondary side.
8. Why it is necessary to calculate S.C KVA of a power system when it gets
faulted.
9. Why it is preferable to express the reactances of various elements in
percentage values for short circuit calculations.

UNIT – 3

1. Draw the connection of sequence network for line to ground fault


through impedance Zf.
2. Draw the vector diagram with the help of sequence components to
obtain the phase voltages.
3. A 3 ph ,Y connected load is connected across 3 ph balanced supply
system. Obtain the set of the symmetrical components of line and phase
voltages.
4. Draw the connection of sequence network for double line to ground
fault through impedance Zf.
5. Derive an expression for fault current for a single line to ground fault of
an unloaded alternator.
6. From fundamentals along with the necessary diagrams obtain the
expressions for fault current for an unloaded synchronous generator for
the following types of faults.(assume the neutral is grounded through an
impedance Zn)(a) Single line to ground fault (b) line to line fault
7. When MVA base is changed from (MVAB,old) to (MVAB,new) and KV base is
changed from(KVB,old) to (KVB,new) .Write the new per unit impedance
Zp.u,new equation.
8. Write the boundary conditions for L-L and L-L-G fault when the fault
occurs at the terminals of the alternators.
9. Write the relation between phase current in terms of sequence
components of current, taking phase A as reference.
10.What are the uses of symmetrical components in power systems?

11. Derive the expression for average 3 ph powers in terms of symmetrical


components.
12.When 3 ph S.C occurs at the terminal of an alternator, draw the
equivalent circuit of an alternator under (a) sub transient (b) transient
(c) steady state condition, and explain it.
13.Discuss the principle of symmetrical components.
14.List out the assumptions made to perform the S.C analysis.
15.Distinguish between symmetrical & unsymmetrical faults.
16.Show that the positive & negative sequence currents are equal in
magnitude both out of phase by 180 degree in a line to line fault. Draw
the interconnection diagram of sequence network.
17.Derive an expression for finding the transient current in RL series excited
by an ac source.
18.Draw the equivalent positive, negative, zero sequence network of an
unloaded alternator.
19. Write the positive, negative, zero sequence current equations when
double line to ground fault is at the terminal of alternator.
20. Draw the positive, negative, zero sequence connection diagrams for Y/Y
(grounded) and delta/delta transformer.
UNIT 4
1. List out the reasons to keep voltage at the consumers terminals within
prescribed limits.

component of the load.

4. Explain the principle of thyristor switched capacitors and phase

7. Explain the operation of thyristor controlled reactor with diagram.
8. Explain about on load tap changing transformers
9. Write short notes on Static Var Compensator.

UNIT 5

1. Explain why a travelling wave suffers reflection when it reaches


different impedances.
2. Explain about Beweley lattice diagram
3. Obtain transmission line coefficient for voltage & current for a line
terminating with two dissimilar lines.
4. Explain surge impedance loading of line.
5. Explain about travelling wave phenomenon over a long line,
considering the line with receiving end is short circuited. Draw
necessary voltage and current wave.
6. For a line terminated through resistance the surge impedance is Z.
Derive the expression for the coefficient of reflection for (i) voltage
and (ii) current wave.
7. Discuss the behavior of wave when it reaches the open circuited end.
8. What is travelling wave? Draw the characteristics of it.
9. Define the surge impedance with reference to transmission line and
deduce from first principles an expression for its value.
10.Define crest, front tail and velocity of travelling wave.
11.Explain the velocity of propagation of travelling wave over the line
along with equation.
12.Write equations for transmitted voltage when the line is terminated
by inductance and capacitance.
