ELPR 220 Midterm Exam Overview

1. Exam Details
Duration: 90 minutes
Format: Paper-based exam
Total Weight: 30% of the final grade

2. Content Covered
The ELPR 220 Midterm Exam covers Unit 1 and Unit 2 (pages 1-52) from the textbook
Effective Academic Writing 2.

3. Exam Format
The exam consists of two parts:
● Part 1: Theoretical and/or Application-based Multiple-Choice Questions (10 marks)
- 12 MCQs to assess theoretical understanding and applied knowledge of key
concepts covered in Units 1 and 2.
- Example theoretical questions:
1. Which of the following best describes a compound sentence?
a. A sentence with one main clause.
b. A sentence with two main clauses joined by a conjunction.
c. A sentence with one dependent clause.
2. What does 'unity' mean in paragraph writing?
a. All sentences relate to the main idea.
b. Sentences are varied in topic.
c. Paragraphs are the same length.

- Example application-based questions:


1. Which of the following is a compound sentence?
a. The rain stopped.
b. She read a book, and he watched a movie.
c. While the sun was setting, they walked along the beach.
2. Which sentence contains a prepositional phrase that shows time?
a. We will meet after the conference.
b. The bird flew across the sky.
c. She placed the book on the table.

• Part 2: Essay Writing (20 marks)
- You will be asked to write a descriptive essay on a given topic.
- You will choose between two topics: Topic A or Topic B. You must write on ONE topic
only. If you write about both, only the first essay will be graded.
- Your essay should contain at least 3 paragraphs and should be about 180-200 words.
- Prompts will be provided to guide your writing. While you are not required to follow
them strictly or in their exact order, they will help you generate and organize your
ideas and ensure you address key points relevant to the essay genre and the given
topic.
- The essay will be graded based on the following five criteria:
1. Task Achievement
2. Grammatical Range and Accuracy
3. Lexical Resources
4. Organization
5. Mechanics
