PREFACE

There many things about this universe that we will never fully
understand, we can apprehend even though we cannot fully
comprehend. As finite creatures, we marvel at the effects present in our
universe (Creation, Reason, Information, Morality, Evil & Science) and
we reason back to a cause (God).

This brings us to the Catholic Church. The oldest institution in the

western world. It can trace its history back almost 2000 years.
And yet with its rich history Christianity has somehow left our
generation confused about many topics such as Identity, Purpose and
Sex, and ironically about the Creator Himself.
It is my intention with this guide to shed some light on several of these
topics using the knowledge I have gained.

The price of ignorance is great as evidenced by the following passage of

scripture.

Hosea 4:6
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have
rejected knowledge,
I reject you from being a priest to me.
And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget
your children.
ANGELS
The Hebrew word for angel is mal’ak and the Greek is angelos. These
words both mean “messenger.”
Angels are:
➢ created spirits and therefore genderless.
➢ immortal.
➢ powerful but their power is delegated.
➢ vast in number.
➢ the army of heaven and have various ranks.

Only four angels are named in Scripture: Gabriel, Michael,

Abaddon/Apollyon and Lucifer.

The Angelic Ranks are:

Cherubim – Gen 3:24 Seraphim – Isaiah 6:2
Principalities – Ephesians 6:12 & Daniel 10 Archangel – Jude 1:9

Cherubs are seen throughout scripture as angels who guard, as seen in

the garden of Eden, the ark of the covenant, tabernacle, and temple.

The seraphim minister to the Lord and serve as His agents of

purification, as demonstrated by their cleansing of Isaiah’s sins before he
began his prophetic ministry.

The principality are those angels assigned to rule over particular regions.

One of the most prominent characters in the Bible is Michael. He is the

only angel specifically designated as an archangel. Michael is not merely
one of the angels but is the head of the military force.
BIBLE
“The Bible is a collection of religious texts, writings, or scriptures sacred
to Jews, Samaritans, Christians, Muslims, Rastafarians, and others.”

COSMOLOGICAL ARGUMENT
A deductive argument used to highlight the fact that the
universe had a beginning.

P1: “Whatever begins to exist has a cause.”

P2: “The universe began to exist.”
Conclusion: “The universe has a cause.”

If the universe had a beginning -SPACE, TIME AND

MATTER came to be at the same instant - which is what the
scientific evidence shows.

Then the cause must be:

Spaceless, Timeless, Immaterial,
Intelligent (created with extreme precision),
Personal (impersonal forces don’t make choices) &
Powerful (able to create from nothing).
DEATH

Gen 2:16-18
God creates Death, introduces it to Man and God tells Man;
“Death is powerless”

Therefore, Death is Good when it is powerless

When given power to kill, Death is abnormal
Death was given the right to kill, when Man sinned.

Death is a tri-fold experience.

➢ The departure of the Holy Spirit from Man.
➢ The removal of Man from God’s Prescence.
➢ The departure of a human’s spirit from his physical body.

The first level of death is the one God is concerned about.

Death is progressive.
“...for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
Adam was dead to God that very day.

A man without the Holy Spirit is a dead man.

EVIL
The problem of Evil arises as a counter to God. It is important
to distinguish between the logical problem and the emotional
problem of evil.

If there is a good God, why doesn’t He stop all the evil in

world?
Excellent question if He did, he may have to start with you or I.
Ever notice, when people talk about evil, they never include
themselves.

God by definition is all powerful. He can do whatever is

logically possible as logic flows from His nature. But God
cannot do what is logically impossible. E.g., He cannot make a
square circle.
What if when God decided to create us, he wanted us to be free
creatures? Freedom is a good thing but freedom without choice
is like a square circle.

God created free creatures which requires them to have choice.

God is responsible for the FACT of freedom but Humans are
responsible for their ACTS of Freedom.
FAITH

Hebrews 11

11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence

of things not seen.

"Belief That" - the mere intellectual assent of God's existence.

"Belief In" – having known intellectually that God exists you

now place your trust in Him.

We make this distinction in relationships; we get intellectual

evidence that someone will be a good partner but all the
evidence in the world doesn’t make someone your partner. You
then take a step of faith in that person and have them become
your partner.

Even demons believe that God exists,

but they do not believe in Him.

GOD

God in Hebrew means “Self-Existing One.” The word God is

not a name it is a description/title.
Elohim – The first word in the Bible that we translate as God.
Strangely the word is both singular & plural. An entity who has a
single nature but plural in personhood.

It does not mean many gods; it means God who is many.

YHWH – tetragrammaton
the Hebrew name of God transliterated in four letters.
The true pronunciation has been lost due to a misunderstanding
of the 3rd commandment in Exodus 3: 13-15.
Widely pronounced as Yahweh.

Attributes –
Aseity. Dimensionless. Immutable. Impeccable. Infinite. Moral.
Omnibenevolent. Omnipotent. Omniscient. Personal.

For God, there is no potential. God has no lack or deficiency

into which He must grow to realize His full potential.
He has pure actuality.
HELL

Hell is a dimension where you are separated from God for all
eternity.

People assume that everybody wants God, that is not true.

There are people who do not want what God is offering and
they reject him eternally. God will not force anyone into His
presence against their will.

However, by rejecting God you are isolated from everything in

this universe which is good. Joy, Love, Hope, etc. You are in a
dimension of complete stone-cold narcissistic self- absorption.

Hell is a place of torment not torture. The distinction is that

torment is self-inflicted.

2 Thessalonians 1

9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut

out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his
might.
HOLY SPIRIT

In the context of the Kingdom of God, the Holy Spirit is the

Governor.
The Kingdom sends an individual from the throne, who is
planted in the colony because He must carry the mind of the
King so that the will of the King is done in the territory so that
the territory becomes just like the Kingdom. So that, when
visiting the colony, you think you’re in the headquarters.

Read John 14: 15

When Adam sinned, Man became unholy.

Hence, there was no place for Him to live.

1 Corinthians 6: 19
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy
Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You
are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore,
honor God with your bodies.
IDOLATRY
The definition of idolatry, according to Webster, is “the worship
of idols or excessive devotion to, or reverence for some person
or thing.” An idol is anything that replaces the one, true God.

The Source of Idolatry

When more value is placed on the how of worship than on the
Who, idolatry occurs.

The best example of this was King Saul. Saul worshipped

worship.

In 1 Samuel 15 we get an interesting story. God commands Saul:

3 “Go and attack the Amalekites! Destroy them and all their
possessions. Don’t have any pity. Kill their men, women,
children, and even their babies. Slaughter their cattle, sheep,
camels, and donkeys.”

However, Saul disobeys. 8 Every Amalekite was killed except

King Agag. 9 Saul and his army let Agag live, and they also
spared the best sheep and cattle. They didn’t want to destroy
anything of value, so they only killed the animals that were
worthless or weak.

But his reason for disobeying is interesting 15 “The army took

them from the Amalekites,” Saul explained. “They kept the best
sheep and cattle, so they could sacrifice them to the Lord your
God. But we destroyed everything else.”

Imagine telling God I disobeyed you so I can worship you!

JESUS

HIS ORIGIN

The first prophecy about Jesus is found in Gen 3: 14–15.

God promises to come into the earth legally through the

woman and destroy Satan’s hold over mankind.

The last prophecy about Jesus is found in Malachi 3: 1.

Jesus is God personified in human form.

HIS MISSION

MATTHEW 25

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you
who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the
kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

Jesus came to give us our inheritance which is the Kingdom

of God not religion.

Luke 24:27

27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he

interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things
concerning himself.

Jesus said the entire Old Testament was about Him.

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
God is a King by creation rights.

Kingdom – The territory or domain over which a King rules.

A Kingdom is a form of government.

Isaiah 9
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the
government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be
called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.

Principles of Kingship
➢ Kings are legal owners of property
➢ Kings own/command whatever is in/on their
property
➢ Kings have absolute authority over their property
➢ A King’s wealth is measured by the wealth of their
property Kings can give their property to anyone

Goal of Kings
When a King or Queen is in power their number one goal is
to influence territory. The children of a King can only become
kings themselves if their Father dies. However, God cannot
die! Therefore, the only way for His children to become kings
while he is alive is if they rule over territory of their own. God
then creates the Earth and gives His children dominion over its
creatures and affairs.
Entering the Kingdom

Religion has taught us that entering the Kingdom of God

is about dying and going to Heaven.

Matthew 6
9 “This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,10 your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Why pray for God’s Kingdom to come on Earth if we need

to die to get in?

To enter the Kingdom, means to pursue and attain citizenship in

the Kingdom of Heaven. Citizenship inherits everything in the
Kingdom.

JOHN 3

3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the
kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

Natural citizenship is the result of natural birth.

The Kingdom of Heaven is supernatural therefore it requires
a spiritual birth. God has made special governmental
arrangements for you to be born in the Kingdom.

Romans 9:10
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in
your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be
saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are
justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith
and are saved.
LOVE AND MARRIAGE
In our culture the highest expression of love for someone is to
marry them. However, most peoples’ cars last longer than their
marriages. Why?

Because they know more about their car than about the person
they are marrying. If your car is destroyed you will never hesitate
to get a new one but if your marriage is ruined you will
ALWAYS hesitate to get into another one.

Points to note
➢ Marriage is the second most important decision a
human will make next to his choice for salvation
➢ Nowhere in Scripture does God command us to marry;
it is a choice not a requirement.
➢ God does not choose our spouse, He does help us
however.

The foundation of marriage is therefore not love but knowledge.

Words used for Love (Greek)

Pragma: Companionate Love

Philautia: Self – Love
Ludus: Flirtatious Love
Storge: Familial love
Philia: Brotherly Love
Eros: Sexual Love
Agape: Unconditional Love
What is Love (Agape)?

This love is not based on emotions. Emotions are

chemicals which change rapidly.

Love is a choice.
Love is the response to understanding the value of something.
Love is a force generated by a decision.
Love is the decision to commit to meet the need of
another without expectation.

Nowhere in Scripture are we ever told why God loves us. If

He provides a reason, it would become conditional.

Reason > Condition

Condition > Expectation

Expectation > Disappointment

Disappointment > Division

Division > Divorce

Divorce > Death of Relationship

Death of Relationship > Dysfunctional Families

Dysfunctional Families > Social Decay

Social Decay > Community Destruction

MEN

IMAGINE YOU WERE ON A GAME SHOW. SEVERAL

CONTESTANTS ARE TRYING TO CONVINCE YOU THAT
THEY ARE A REAL MAN... THE GOAL IS TO GUESS WHICH
ONE IS AUTHENTHIC.

Contestant #1 tells you he is the Real Man because he fills the

traditional male role: he supports his family financially while his
wife cares for the children and the home. As long as he provides a
roof over their heads and food for them to eat, he’s fulfilling his
duty as a husband and father. This man doesn’t consider his wife
to be his true equal.

Contestant #2 says he is the Real Man because he has a culturally

progressive role: he shares household and childrearing
responsibilities with his wife while they both pursue careers. He
thinks of his wife as his equal.

Contestant #3 explains that he is the Real Man because he has

been freed from male stereotypes and has decided to take on the
nurturer role of caring for the children and home while his wife
goes to work. He considers his wife equal to himself—or maybe
even better, since she has a more compassionate, sensitive
nature than he does.

These are some of the images of manhood that are competing for men’s
acceptance today. Yet there seems to be no clear -cut winner. In
addition, society keeps mixing and matching these images until men
don’t know what’s expected of them anymore. Meanwhile, Hollywood is
flooding society with intriguing icons of masculinity, such as James
Bond or Capt. America. Even though these images are superheroes
rather than real men, it’s difficult not to start thinking that a real man
should somehow imitate the power and resourcefulness they exhibit.
PRINCIPLES
- A man’s identity is found in his purpose, not in his roles.
- Men’s underlying purpose transcends culture and tradition.
- Knowledge of what it means to be a true man cannot be
acquired by observing the confused culture around us.
- The purpose of something can be found only in the
mind of its maker.
- Men need a God-given identity if they are to fulfill
their true purpose.
- When men are ignorant of their true identity, it affects not
only their own callings and fulfillment, but also that of
their families and of society as a whole. This is because, as
the man goes, so goes the family, society, and the world.

THE 5 NEEDS OF THE MALE

Sexual Fulfillment, Respect, Recreational Companionship,
Domestic Support & Attractive Woman.

GOD’S PURPOSE FOR THE MALE

- The male’s priority means that he was formed first in
order to be the foundation of the human family.
- The male’s position means that he is to remain
continually in God’s presence. God intended for the man
to grow in leadership ability by first learning to rule the
Garden.
- The male’s assignment includes six specific purposes he
is meant to fulfill: visionary, leader, teacher,
cultivator, provider, and protector.
- God allowed Adam to name Eve because He wanted the
male to be totally responsible for the female.
MIRACLES

Before there were any mass communication devices, how would

one King communicate with another Kingdom across a great
distance?

Answer: By sending a message

What would be on that message to prove that it was really

sent by the King?

Answer: A seal

The seal would have to be unique to the

king and difficult to forge.

Miracles occur in the Bible around 3 periods.

1. Moses
2. Elijah and Elisha
3. Jesus and the Apostles

Miracles are a seal that authenticates that a

message is from God.
OLD TESTAMENT

Why does God appear harsher in the Old Testament?

Anyone who does not see a major difference in God’s
disposition between the testaments has either never read the
Bible or is being willfully dishonest.
Let me preface this answer by saying God has not changed but
there is a good reason for the perceived difference.

The Old Testament spans 1000s of years while the New

Testament is only about 63 years long. So, this is why we see so
much judgment in the Old Testament because civilizations
began, generations flourished, rebelled and were judged.
Is God Immoral Because of the Atrocities Committed in the
Old Testament?

Atheists will say ok but what about God ordering the genocide
of peoples such as the Canaanites? Good question, sort of.
1. If there is no God why is any “atrocity” in the OT
wrong?
2. Is God arbitrary or does He give reasons for judging
people in the OT?

The Canaanites would sacrifice their babies to their metal god

known as Molech. They would heat the idol up and place the
babies on the arms and watch the children sizzle to death.
During the ceremony they would play the drums loudly so the
parents didn’t hear the screams of their own children.

So, my question to the atheist is why complain that God

doesn’t stop evil but then complain when He does?
PRAYER
KEYS
Keys are principles and precepts that affect change and allow function.
The Bible talks about the keys of the Kingdom.

A key is only useful if you have it (possession) and you know what it
opens (knowledge).

Prayer is one of those keys. Prayer is one of the most important yet
ironically misunderstood keys. Why is it the most important?
Prayer is the key that unlocks all the other keys.

Why don’t people pray?

The prayer meeting is the smallest meeting in any church and we relegate
the activity to a few elders who have free time.
There is no ministry of prayer in the Bible. No one is called to pray.
We created a prayer ministry and assign other people to do it because we
don’t want to. People don’t pray because they don’t get results.

There’s a vending machine at your school, at the bus park or at your job.
You go to this vending machine and put your money in and it does not
give you what you want. What would you do?

This is a normal human reaction to disappointment.

If God promises to answer prayer, and we aren’t receiving what God
promised, then there must be something in the system that is being done
incorrectly.

Have we ever seen or been to an all-night prayer meeting? Sometimes

we see people with pillows (just in case). And the fascinating things
about these prayer meetings, nothing changed.
It doesn’t matter how hard you pray, how long you pray, your choice of
words, how serious you are, if you do something incorrectly nothing will
change. All you are doing is kicking the vending machine.

“It seems that without God, man cannot – and without man,
God will not.”

But what does this mean and how is it linked to prayer?

God cannot do anything on earth without human involvement and Man
cannot hope to get anything done without God’s involvement.
Therefore, there must be a partnership between divinity and humanity.

What happens on earth depends on you…

We have been taught to leave everything to God but the Bible teaches
something different. God is depending on us for Him to do things on
earth.

Prayer is EARTHLY license for HEAVENLY interference.

The Value of Prayer
Mark 6:45-46, Luke 6:12-13, Luke 22:45-46

Jesus had a personal prayer life. If you don’t have a personal

prayer life you won’t enjoy a corporate prayer life. If you keep
giving God access and permission you can’t go wrong.

Kingdom and Prayer

The word for prayer in the original Hebrew is actually petition.
Petition is not a religious term. It is a legal term.
Petitioning is a legal demand made on the government by the
citizens based on the rights / privileges that it has for the
citizens.

So, when the Bible says pray, what it means is demand from me
what I legally promised.

So, we take up our constitution (Bible), find anywhere in the

constitution where there is a case or a promise and then you say
based on what I need on Earth right now, I’m going to look at
this promise in Section Isaiah Subsection 40 Article 29 and this
is the promise, I am going to petition you in the next 30 minutes
for this promise and when I finish, I know you heard me
because I am not praying for my will, I am praying for your will.
I then leave the courtroom and I thank him all the way because
it is already done.

Prayer is the legal demand for promises and rights made

by a citizen in good-standing to the government based on
the constitutional law.
PREDESTINATION

God is omniscient therefore He knows who will be with

Him and who will reject Him before ever creating this
universe, if that is the case how can we have free will?

Let’s say the you and your friends are watching the World Cup
matches, and for whatever reason you have to leave and run an
errand and you ask your friends to record the games so you can
watch them when you return. On your way home from your
errand, an overexcited friend texts you the scores of all the
matches which angers you. Nevertheless, you go home and
proceed to watch the recorded matches...

Question: because you know the outcome of the match

does that affect the free will of the football players on the
field?
No. The players on the field are still freely doing what they are
doing.

God is outside of time, so from his perspective

everything has already happened.
His knowledge of the outcome does not affect our ability
to choose that outcome.
SATAN
“The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the
world he didn't exist”—Charles Baudelaire.

Satan was originally named Lucifer which means light bearer.

Light represents knowledge and truth.
Read: Isaiah 14: 12-15 & Ezekiel 28: 11-19

Lucifer is an anointed cherub – Cherubs safeguard God’s

holiness, (they protect us from God) because God’s holiness
cannot look at sin, hence why no man has seen God and lived.
Guardian Cherubs would get information first because of how
close they are to God. Satan possesses a lot of information.
His pride corrupted him and he left the Truth – this is how he
became the Father of Lies.

Romans 11:29
For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable [for He does
not withdraw what He has given, nor does He change His mind
about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends
His call]. Satan, therefore, possesses all his wisdom, power, and
abilities from the time he was a guardian cherub. This is why he
has to be bound.

Role as a Cherub
Lucifer was in charge of Culture, Arts, Dancing and Music.
This explains why so much corruption and demonic imagery are
in these areas.
Satan has many names and all his names reveal something about
his nature and character.

Satan – Adversary (malicious in his intent)

Devil – Slanderer (speaks the truth with the intent to harm)
Destroyer – (to annihilate)
Serpent – (Symbolizing his patience and cunning)
Prince of this World – Ruler of the Earthly System
The Wicked One – (Source of wickedness)

Prince of the Power of the Air - because Satan does not

possess a physical body, he cannot enter the earth legally.
Demons set up their Kingdom in the air. A Fallen Angel’s
number one goal is to possess a human body to make himself
legal on Earth.

Tempter – (means to test your strength and try for weakness)

Peter boasting about he will never deny you. Watch what you
say. Don't say anything you aren't willing to die for.

Example: you proclaim you are going to start a business and

Satan says ok let's see if you are serious. Satan has control over
the bankers you go to with your proposal and you can’t
understand why they are saying No. The first say no, 2nd, 3rd,
4th but the 5th banker is a God-fearing man. But you gave up
before you got to him. Now, your dream was crushed.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God.

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
SIN
The disobedience of Mankind which brought the curse Death
into the earth. God calls this ‘Sin.’

The word Sin in Hebrew means rebellion. In Greek, Sin means

to miss the mark.

The word Sin when used in reference to Jesus is usually singular

because He really only died for one sin. Rebellion against the
known will of God.

Not content with his position, Lucifer desired to be higher than

God, and that was his downfall, the beginning of sin. Renamed
Satan, he brought sin to the human race in the Garden of Eden,
where he tempted Adam and Eve with the same enticement,
“you shall be like God.” Genesis 3 describes Adam and Eve’s
rebellion against God and against His command. Since that time,
sin has been passed down through all the generations of
mankind and we, Adam’s descendants, have inherited sin from
him. Romans 5:12 tells us that through Adam sin entered the
world, and so death was passed on to all men because “the
wages of sin is death.”
TESTIMONY
If you have ever attended a testimony service, we see people
taking the stage producing these heartfelt, tear-jerking tales of
God’s goodness in their lives.
Personally, I have always disliked the practice and I will explain
why.

According to Dictionary.com the word testimony means a

formal written or spoken statement, especially one given in a
court of law. Firstly, the word testimony is a legal term but
there is one key component missing from the definition above
and also from these church services and that is evidence.

The Hebrew word in the bible that is translated as testify is

marturew which means to be a witness, give (evidence), bear
record, have (obtain, of) good (honest) report.

Example: I go to court because someone rear-ended my car. I

call the passenger at the time of the accident as my first witness.
What exactly is the court looking for? Is it an emotional story
describing how I am an excellent driver and the accident was not
my fault or are they looking for evidence and details that prove
the other person’s negligence?

A testimony is a believer providing evidence through their

lifestyle to those in the ‘World’ that the Kingdom of God is
the correct choice. How can you sing my father is a millionaire
and yet you are broke? You are lying in the courtroom.
Why would they come to God and you are not living any
better than they are?
TITHING
Tithing has nothing to do with giving God money.

Tithes and Offering are God’s management training program

for mankind.

10% of everything - Deuteronomy 14:22-28

If you have 24 hours in a day 2 hours and 24 minutes of that day

doesn’t belong to you. Whenever you don’t use that time for
God’s purposes you are stealing from God.

Can you consistently set aside 10% of everything for His

purposes?

Everything on earth already belongs to God so why does God

ask for 10% because it is not about the thing, it is about your
discipline. God is after your discipline.

If God can trust you to manage 10% then He can trust you with
the 90% that is left.

What does tithing does for you? Tithing increases your

Accountability Diligence
Discipline Faithfulness
Honesty Trustworthiness

All of these are qualities of Effective Managers.

WOMEN
The Challenge of the 21st Century Woman
She is trying to be a woman in a world designed for men
She is pressed on EVERY side to be EVERYTHING to
EVERYBODY
The average woman is confused and insecure about her purpose
and role in life.

The Manufacturer’s Manual: Gen 2

8
And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and
there he put the man whom he had formed.
15
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of
Eden to work it and take care of it. 15 And the Lord God took
the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to
keep it. God outlines the things a man must have before he
even thinks about pursuing a woman.

These are the questions women must ask of any man.

Eden - Do you love God’s presence?
Work - Are you working? Work is not a job but his life’s
purpose.
Dress – Can you improve me?
Take care & keep it – Can you protect me?

Helper – partner
Image - possessing God's nature & characteristics
Receiver - You make any woman angry when you take from her
Worshipper – As a created spirit, they are able to worship God

Incubator - receives, multiplies, gives it life, and then gives it

back to you. A female incubates everything. Give a woman:
Sentences you get a paragraph Paragraphs you get a book
A house you get a home Sperm you get a baby
Frustration you get hell

If a man doesn't like what he receives from a woman,

he has to check what he gave her to incubate

Prophetess – Read Acts 2:17

The man receives a vision and tells his partner and years later he
is discouraged and she prophesies his vision back to him; the
foolish man calls that nagging...
ZION

The first mention of Zion in the Bible is 2 Samuel 5:7: “David

captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.”
Zion was originally an ancient Jebusite fortress in the city of
Jerusalem. After David’s conquest of the fortress, Jerusalem
became a possession of Israel. The royal palace was built there,
and Zion/Jerusalem became the seat of power in Israel’s
kingdom.

The word Zion is also used in a theological or spiritual sense in

Scripture. In the Old Testament Zion refers figuratively to Israel
as the people of God (Isaiah 60:14). In the New
Testament, Zion refers to God’s spiritual kingdom. We have not
come to Mount Sinai, says the apostle, but “to Mount Zion and
to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” (Hebrews
12:22). Peter, quoting Isaiah 28:16, refers to Christ as
the Cornerstone of Zion: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen
and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will
never be put to shame” (1 Peter 2:6).
