I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Students will be able to review and use the present tenses.

I. The Present Simple Tense
1. Form
- Affirmative: S + V1…. S + am/is/are……
- Negative: S + do/does + not + V….. S + am/is/are + not…..

2. Use
a. Things that happen all the time, repeatedly, often,
sometimes, never,..
(always, usually, often, sometimes, occasionally, seldom,
rarely, every….)
Ex: I usually go to school in the afternoon.
b. Things that are always true.
Ex: The earth moves around the sun.
II. The Present Progressive Tense -Review the form, -Look at, listen
1. Form the use of the and answer the
- Affirmative: S + am/is/are + V-ing…… present simple, teacher’s
- Negative: S + am/is/are + not + V-ing….. present progressive questions.
- Interrogative: Am/Is/Are + S + V-ing ….? and present perfect,

a. Things that are happening now (now, at the moment, at perfect and past
this time, at present….) progressive.
Ex: - I am looking for the latest newspaper now.
- They are watching a sport game show at the moment.
b. Things that are happening around now
Ex. I’m playing a lot of tennis these days.
3. Note:
Some verbs a re normally used in simple tense, not
progressive, even if we mean ‘just now’.
(hate, know, like, love, mean, need, prefer, seem, understand,
want, agree, believe, depend, think, see, look, feel, remember,
mind, recognize…)
Ex: - We are tenth-grade students now.
- I understand the lesson at the moment.
III. The Present Perfect Tense
1. Form
- Affirmative: S + has/have +V3/ed….
- Negative: S + has/have + not + V3/ed…..
- Interrogative: Has/Have + S + V3/ed….?
2. Use
a. For actions which started in the past and are still happening
(never, ever, not…yet, since, for, so far, until now, up to now,
…….)
Ex: We have learnt English for 5 years.
b. For past actions whose time is not stated, or for recently
completed actions (just, recently, lately).
Ex: She has just gone out.
c. To announce news, changes or events that affect the
present.
Ex: He has lost almost all his hair.
IV. The Past Simple
1. Form:
- Affirmative : S +V 2/ed
- Negative: S + did +not +v 1
- Interrogative: Did +S + v 1….?
2. Use
a. Completed actions that took place at a definite time in the
past. The time is either mentioned or implied.
Ex: Mary visited the British Museum when she was in
London.
b. Permanent situations in the past.
Ex. John lived in Ireland for 15 years.
c. completed actions that took place one after the other in the
past.( in story-telling or narratives)
Ex. She woke up, washed her face and had breakfast.
d. past habits with frequency adverbs always, often, seldom,
never…
Ex. When Paul was younger he often went fishing with his
father.
V. The Past Perfect :
1. Form:
Affirmative: S + had + V 3/ed
Negative: S + had not+ V 3/ed
Interrogative: Had + S + V 3/ed ….?
2. Use:
a. for the past event that was completed before another past
event. With before, after, when, as soon as and until we can
use the Past Simple instead of the Past Perfect if the actions
are in chronological order.
Ex. By the time we arrived, the film had started.
b. For the past event that was completed before a definite
time in the past.
Ex. Angela had finished cooking by 11:30 a.m.
VI. The Past Progressive :
Form:
Affirmative: S + was/were +v-ing
Negative: S+ was/were+ v-ing
Interrogative: Was/Were +S + v-ing….?
Use:
a. An action that was in progress at a definite time in the past.
Ex. This time last Friday, I was flying to London.
b. Actions happening at the same time in the past. Ex. While
Helen was watching TV, Nick was studying.
c. A lengthy action that was in progress when a shorter or
sudden one interrupted it. The longer action is in the Past
Progressive and the shorter one is in the Past simple.
Ex. She was having dinner when the lights went out.
