 You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes.
 This time is to be spent in reading the question paper.
 The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the
answers.
 The intended marks for the questions or parts of questions are given alongside
the questions.
 Section I is compulsory. Attempt any four questions from Section II.
 This paper consists of 10 printed pages.

into a plane mirror which is at a distance of 2 m in front of him. At what
distance is the chart seen by the patient? Explain.
(vi) Why is the use of wood as a fuel not advisable although wood is a [2]
renewable source of energy?
(vii) (a) What is the relationship between time period and frequency of an [2]
oscillation of a simple pendulum?
(b) Name the physical quantity related to the unit kilogram metre per
second.

(b) What is the braking force applied at the end of `5 seconds` to bring
the car to a stop within one second?

(ii) Show that the rate of change of momentum is equal to the product of [3]
mass and acceleration.
(iii) (a) Mention any two requirements for selecting a unit of a physical [4]
quantity.
(b) Name the instrument which can accurately measure:
(1) the diameter of a sphere.
(2) the thickness of a paper.

(i) (a) How is S.I. unit of heat related to the unit calorie? [3]
(b) Name two substances which contract on heating.
(ii) When an object is placed at a distance of 40cm from a concave mirror, [3]
the size of the image is one-fourth that of the object.
(a) Calculate the distance of image from the mirror.
(b) What will be the focal length of the mirror?
(iii) (a) Define pressure. [4]
(b) Calculate the equivalent height of mercury,which will exert as much
pressure as 960 m of sea water of density 1040 kgm-3.
(Density of mercury is 13600 kgm-3)
(c) Which fact about liquid pressure does the diagram below illustrate?

(i) (a) Express the speed 36 kmh-1 in ms-1. [3]
(b) What can you say about the motion of a body if:
(1) its displacement –time graph is a straight line parallel to time
axis and
(2) its velocity –time graph is a straight line parallel to time axis?
(ii) A stone dropped from the top of a cliff reaches ground level in 4 s and [3]
buries itself 0.8 m into the mud. Calculate:
(a) height of cliff,
(b) final velocity of stone on reaching ground level, and
(c) retardation produced by the mud. Take g = 9.8 ms-2.
(iii) (a) A bunch of feathers and a stone of the same mass are released [4]
simultaneously in air. Which will fall faster and why?
(b) A block of wood of volume 25 cm3 floats on water with 20 cm3 of its
volume immersed. Calculate:
(1) the density of wood,
(2) the weight of block of wood.

(b) Why does a glass vessel break when it falls on a hard floor but does
not break when it falls on a carpet?
(ii) (a) State the approximate speed of ultrasound in air. [3]
(b) A hunter fires a gun on a cliff. Sound of firing is heard 12.5 s after
seeing the smoke by an observer 4 km away from the cliff. Calculate
the speed of sound in the air.
(iii) (a) What do you mean by global warming? [4]
(b) State one disadvantage of construction of large dams for generating
hydroelectric power.
(c) Copy and complete the following ray diagram to obtain the image of
an object OA kept in front of the concave mirror.

(i) (a) What is a neutral point? [4]
(b) State any one property of magnetic field lines.
(c) Copy the following figure and draw atleast two magnetic field lines
between the two magnets.

(ii) (a) How much is the charge on an electron? [3]


(b) What is responsible for the flow of current through (1) a metallic
conductor, (2) an electrolyte?
