Vermiculture

Vermiculture is the scientific process of raising worms to decompose organic waste, requiring suitable species, appropriate density, temperature, moisture, and bedding materials. It utilizes various organic materials for culturing while avoiding harmful substances, and worms can be harvested through manual, migration, or mechanical methods. Vermicomposting enhances soil fertility and moisture retention, producing nutrient-rich compost beneficial for gardening and agriculture.

VERMICULTURE

DEFINITION

• Vermiculture: It is Scientific process of raising (harvesting) worms to decompose organic

waste.
IMPORTANT PREREQUISITES FOR SUCCESSFUL
VERMICULTURE
• Selection of suitable species of earthworm
• Appropriate worm density
• Temperature
• Moisture
• Bedding and feeding material
MATERIALS FOR CULTURING

• Garbage
• Leaves
• Banana residue
• Shredded bark, sawdust, wood shaving
• Citrus wastes
• Fish scrap
MATERIALS WHICH SHOULDN’T BE USED

• Waste from birds, dogs and cats

• Human faeces
• Highly acidic materials
• Diseased plants
• Toxic materials
METHODS OF HARVESTING OF WORMS

• There are three different methods

• Manual method: Involves hand sorting picking the worms directly by hand
• Migration method: Use of screen or onion bag
• Mechanical method: Use of mechanical harvester
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF VERMICULTURE

• Earthworms play a key role as decompose in various food chains in helping in cycling of
nutrients thereby improving soil fertility
• Vermi composting enhance enriches the soil with nutrients and increases its ability to
retain moisture
• It also leads to formation of manure with higher nitrogen content and nutrients like
potassium phosphorus magnesium more as compared to conventional compost

VERMICOMPOST

• Vermicompost is an organic compost created through the decomposition of organic waste

materials, such as food scraps and agricultural residues, by the activity of earthworms.
The process involves earthworms consuming the waste and excreting nutrient-rich
material known as worm castings, which enhance soil fertility and structure.
Vermicompost is widely used in gardening, agriculture, and horticulture as an
environmentally friendly and sustainable fertilizer.
