UNIT VII.

ADVANCED ALGEBRA (LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO AND THREE

VARIABLES)

Overview
This unit will give an idea about linear equations in two and three variables. This will also
help you to graph linear equation in two variables and solve system of equations involving two and
three variables using different methods

Learning Objectives

At the end of the unit, I am able to:

1. Define and identify systems of equations in two variables;
2. Graph linear equation in two variables; and
3. Solve systems of equations involving two and three variables.
4. Solve systems of linear equations by Cramer’s Rule and matrix

Lesson Proper

Graphs of Linear Equations in Two Variables

A linear equation is an equation for a straight line it is an equation of the form reducible to
the form
ax + by = c
where a, b, and c are constants a, b ≠ 0 is called a linear equation in x and y.

Systems of Linear Equations

a.) Dependent Equations – The graphs

coincide, the solution is infinite.
x + 3y = 2
2x + 6y = 4
b.) Inconsistent Equations – The graphs are
parallel to each other.
There is no solution to the system.

3x – 2y = 1
6x – 4y = 5

c.) Consistent Equations – The graphs intersect,

there is a solution to the system
3x – y = 7
2x + 3y = 12
Solution (3, 2)

Solution of System of Equation

Example:
1. x + y = 3
3x – y = 1

a.) Graphical Method

Find the x and y intercepts
x+y=3
x = 0; y = 3
y = 0; x = 3

3x – y = 1
x = 0; y = -1
y = 0; x = 1/3
Solution (1, 2)
b.) Elimination Method (Addition or Subtraction)
x + y = 3; eq. 1
3x – y = 1; eq. 2

Add eq. 1 and eq. 2 to eliminate y

x+y=3
3x – y = 1
4x = 4
x=1

Substitute the value of x in any of the two equations

x+y=3
1+y=3
y=2
Solution: (1, 2)

c.) Substitution Method

x + y = 3; eq. 1
3x – y = 1; eq. 2

Solve for x or y in any of the two equations

(From eq. 1) x + y = 3 ; x=3–y

Substitute x = 3 – y in eq. 2
3(3 – y) – y = 1
9 – 3y – y = 1
- – 4y = 8
y=2

Substitute the value of y in any of the two equations.

Using eq.1
x+3=y
x=3–y
x=3–2
x=1
Solution: (1, 2)
2. 2x – 5y = -4
3x + 4y = 17

a.) Graphical Method

Find the x and y intercepts
2x – 5y = -4
x = 0; y = 4/5
y = 0; x = -2

3x + 4y = 17
x = 0; y = 17/4
y = 0; x = 17/3
Solution: (3, 2)

b.) Elimination Method

2x – 5y = -4
3x + 4y = 17

Multiply eq. 1 by 3 and eq. 2 by 2 to eliminate x

3(2x – 5y = -4); eq. 1
2(3x + 4y = 17); eq. 2
Subtract the two new equations
6x – 15y = -12
(-) 6x + 8y = 34
-23y = -46
y=2
Substitute the value of x in any of the two equations
using eq.1,
2x – 5 (2) = -4
2x = 6
x =3
Solution: (3, 2)

c.) Substitution Method

2x – 5y = -4; eq. 1
3x + 4y = -17; eq. 2

Solve for x in eq. 1

2x = -4 + 5y
−4+5𝑦
x= ; eq. 3
2
Substitute eq. 3 in eq. 2.
3(−4+5𝑦)
(2)
+ 4y = 17
-12 + 15y + 8y = 34
23y = 46
y=2
Solve for x using eq. 3
−4+5(2)
x= 2
x = 6/2
x=3
Solution: (3, 2)
