Music (Instrumental)
Paper- A (Theory) Semester- I

Max Marks : 38 Lectures to be delivered :38


Internal Assessment : 12 Marks Time Allowed : 3 hours
(Internal Test = 7 marks, Attendance = 5 marks)
Pass Marks : 35% in the subject
(Theory and Practical separately)
Note: (i) Along with Music ( Instrumental), the candidate can also take Music (Vocal)
and Tabla as other elective subjects.
(ii) The candidate can opt any of the following instruments : Sitar, Sarangi,
Veena, Violin, Dilruba, Flute, Santoor, Guitar, Sarod.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PAPER-SETTER

* The question paper will consist of three sections : A, B, & C. Section A & B will have four
questions from the respective sections of the syllabus and will carry 06 marks each. Section C will
consist of 07 objective type questions which will cover the entire syllabus uniformly and will
carry 14 marks in all.
* While sending the syllabus to Paper Setter the syllabus prescribed for Practical Paper should
also be sent.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATES

Candidates are required to attempt two questions each from the sections A & B and the entire
Section C is compulsory.
Section-A

(i) Historical development of music in the following periods :

(i) Vedic Period (ii) Natya Shashtra Period

(ii) Definition and explanation of the following musical terms :

Sangeet , Naad , Swara , Bols of Mizrab

(iii) Importance of Taal and Laya in Instrumental Music.

(iv) Brief life sketches and contribution towards Indian Music of the following :

(i) Ustad Alaudin Khan (ii) Pt. Vishnu Narayan

(v) Classification of Indian Musical Instruments.


(vi) Knowledge of the following musical Instruments :
(i) Sitar (ii) Tabla
(vii) Description and Notation of the prescribed Raags (Gats) and Taals.
Raags : Bilawal, Khamaj
Taals : Teentaal, Ektaal, Rupak Taal
(viii) Elementary knowledge of the following raags :
Alhaiya Bilawal , Kalawati
PAPER- B (PRACTICAL)
Max Marks : 38 Lectures to be delivered : 75
Internal Assessment – 12 Marks Time allowed : 20 minutes
(Internal Test = 7 Marks)
Attendance = 5 Marks)
Pass Marks: 35% in the subject
(Theory and Practical separately)

(i) Performances Viva - 30 Marks


(ii) Playing of Harmonium - 04 Marks
(iii) Playing of Tabla - 04 Marks

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PAPER-SETTER /PRACTICAL EXAMINER


There Should not be more then 12 students in a batch for practical examination.
(i) One Drut Gat with short Alaps, Toras and Jhalas in each of the following raags :
Bilawal - Khamaj.
(ii) Ability to demonstrate Ektal, Teen Tal by hands in Ekgun and Dugun Layakaries.
(iii) Ability to play Ten Alankar on your instrument with different bols of mizrab.
(iv) Singing of Five Alankars & National Anthem while playing Harmonium.
(v) Ability to play Aroh, Avroh & Pakar of the following raags- Alhaiya Bilawal, Kalawati

(v) Dhun in any Raag.
(vi) Ability to play Aroh, Avroh & Pakar of the following Raags-Bhimplasi, Bhopali.
