If x2 + y2 + 2gx + 2fy - 12 = 0 represents a circle with centre (2, 3). Find g, f and its radius.
Sol: Give c = (−g, −f) = (2, 3)
∴ g = −2, f = −3, c = −12
Radius = √ g2 + f2 − c = √ (−2)2 + (−3)2 + 12 = √ 4 + 9 + 12 = 5
2. If the length of the tangent from (5, 4) to the circle x2 + y2 + 2ky = 0 is 1 then find k.
Sol: Length of tangent = √S11 = √ (5)2 + (4)2 + 8k
but length of tangent = 1
∴ 1 = √ 25 + 16 + 8k
squaring an both sides
1 = 25 + 16 + 8k ⇒ 1 = 41 + 8k ⇒ 8k = 1 − 41
