include which level and pass-off you will be completing in the topic line. (Ex. Level 1-Pass-Off 2)
Terms
______1. Name and define the 7 Essentials of Effective Practice orally, in order, and from memory (back of this
sheet). Must cover eyes on the video.
______2. Pass the Level 1 Terms Quiz with a perfect score by identifying and defining all musical terms found in
your Essential Elements Book 1 page 1 - 10. See the Terms list (back of this sheet). An attempt can only be made
once a day.

Long Tones - camera ON the TUNER (not on you) set to 440!


Perform a 10 second long tone with a characteristic tone and with your personal tuner on each of the following
notes (steady needle, steady air, on green (in tune):

Composition - start your recording, show empty workspace with a blank piece of paper, complete pass-off pencil, show completed
pass-off to the camera.
______8. Compose 2 measures each of 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 each using at least one quarter, half, and whole note and
at least one quarter, half, and whole rest. Use the checklist below as your guide. Write the counts.

Instrument Maintenance
______9. Demonstrate the proper maintenance and care of your instrument (see below).
Flute
1. Tuning rod and swab/handkerchief to clean inside all joints of the flute.
Oboe and Bassoon
1. Silk swab(s), cork grease, three (3) Medium-Soft reeds, reed case that holds all three.
2. Swab all joints; grease all corks (except bocal cork)
Clarinet and Saxophone
1. Silk swab, mouthpiece brush, neck brush/swab (saxophone), four (4) reeds, reed case that holds all 4 reeds,
Rovner Leather Ligature.
2. Scrub mouthpiece; swab all joints; clean neck (saxophone); grease all corks.
Brass: Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba
1. The cleaning kit includes valve oil, slide grease for tuning slides, cleaning brushes, and a snake.
a. Trombone - Small spray bottle of water and slide lubricant as well.
2. Scrub mouthpiece with a mouthpiece brush; clean lead pipe and/or tuning slide with cleaning snake; use
slide grease on tuning slide; use valve brush inside a valve casing; oil a valve/lubricate trombone slide.
Rhythm
______10. Be able to count measures 21-24 from Chart 9.5 and measures 1-4 from 10.5 out loud. Remember
to include proper foot tapping.

Major Scales 📹 Any major scale is allowed. Any tempo, rhythm, and articulation pattern is allowed, within reason. Memorization
not required.
______16. Spell and play 1 major scale and arpeggio (see Technique Builders or Scale Sheets).
Sight Reading
______17. ONLY TO BE COMPLETED ON DESIGNATED PASS-OFF DAYS: Let the director know that
you will be attempting the Sight Reading Pass-Off.
The Student will be provided with a piece of music to sight-read, the Director will have the student enter a Break
Out Room and be shown the Sight Reading Example. You will only have 45 seconds to view the example and then
perform it.

THE SEVEN ESSENTIALS OF EFFECTIVE PRACTICE


Isolate
Choose one specific section in your music that you wish to improve.

Take it slow
Establish a slow practice tempo, 40-60 beats per minute (bpm).

Practice Steps
1. Count. 3. Note Name+fingers. 5. Air Play+fingers.
2. Note Name. 4. “Tah”+fingers. 6. Play
Tone
Prioritize producing a characteristic sound.

Purposeful Repetitions
Each repetition should improve by setting a goal and using an effective strategy.

Piece it Together
Group two or more measures together until you’re able to play the entire selection.

Repeat, Adding Components of Playing


Slightly improve the tempo, add articulations, add dynamics, add style.
