Terms
______1. Name and define the 7 Essentials of Effective Practice orally, in order, and from memory (back of this
sheet). Must cover eyes on the video.
______2. Pass the Level 1 Terms Quiz with a perfect score by identifying and defining all musical terms found in
your Essential Elements Book 1 page 1 - 10. See the Terms list (back of this sheet). An attempt can only be made
once a day.
Instrument Maintenance
______9. Demonstrate the proper maintenance and care of your instrument (see below).
Flute
1. Tuning rod and swab/handkerchief to clean inside all joints of the flute.
Oboe and Bassoon
1. Silk swab(s), cork grease, three (3) Medium-Soft reeds, reed case that holds all three.
2. Swab all joints; grease all corks (except bocal cork)
Clarinet and Saxophone
1. Silk swab, mouthpiece brush, neck brush/swab (saxophone), four (4) reeds, reed case that holds all 4 reeds,
Rovner Leather Ligature.
2. Scrub mouthpiece; swab all joints; clean neck (saxophone); grease all corks.
Brass: Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba
1. The cleaning kit includes valve oil, slide grease for tuning slides, cleaning brushes, and a snake.
a. Trombone - Small spray bottle of water and slide lubricant as well.
2. Scrub mouthpiece with a mouthpiece brush; clean lead pipe and/or tuning slide with cleaning snake; use
slide grease on tuning slide; use valve brush inside a valve casing; oil a valve/lubricate trombone slide.
Rhythm
______10. Be able to count measures 21-24 from Chart 9.5 and measures 1-4 from 10.5 out loud. Remember
to include proper foot tapping.
