Fluid Mechanics

The document presents a series of fluid mechanics problems involving calculations of viscosity, pressure, buoyancy, and flow dynamics. It covers various scenarios including the behavior of liquids in ducts, the effects of pressure on volumes, and the principles of buoyancy and flow in pipes. Each problem requires the application of fundamental fluid mechanics principles to derive specific values and understand fluid behavior under different conditions.

MCM CORRE 2 – DAY 1

Fluid Mechanics
1. The viscosity of water at 70 ℃ is 0.00402 poise and its specific gravity is 0.978. Determine its absolute
viscosity in Pa-s and its kinematic viscosity in m2/s and stokes.

2. A liquid of viscosity 5.2 × 10−5 lbf-sec/ft2 is flowing in a rectangular duct. The equation of the
symmetrical velocity (ft/s) is approximately v = 3y0.7 ft/s where y is in inches. Compute the velocity
gradient at y 3 inches from the wall, and the shear stress of the fluid at that point.

3. 4.9 cubic feet of water are compressed to 5000 psig. What is the volume decrease if the temperature is
60 ℉? Assume the average bulk modulus of elasticity of 311,000 psi.

4. Estimate the height to which water will rise in a capillary tube of diameter 5 mm if the surface tension
is 0.0728 N/m and the contact angle is 0°.

5. Convert a vacuum pressure of 110 mm of mercury into absolute pressure if atmospheric pressure is
10.5 meters of water.

6. A hydraulic press is used to raise an 80 kN cargo truck. If oil of specific gravity 0.82 acts on the piston
under pressure of 10 MPa, what is the diameter of piston required?

7. If the pressure in the air space above an oil (SG = 0.75) surface in a closed tank is 115 kPa absolute,
what is the pressure 2 meters below the surface?

8. There are two fluids in an open end manometer. Fluid 1 is glycerine (12.4 kN/m 3), 70 mm below the
closed end and fluid 2 is carbon tetrachloride (15.57 kN/m3) which is 150 mm above fluid 1. If the open
end is exposed to the atmosphere at 101.325 kPa, what is the absolute pressure at the closed end of the
manometer if it is occupied by fluid 1?

9. A solid material in a cube shape floats in oil of density 800 kg/m3 with one-third of the block out of the
oil. What is the buoyant force on the cube whose edge is 0.75 m?

10. An iceberg having specific gravity of 0.92 is floating on salt water of specific gravity 1.03. If the volume
of ice above the water surface is 1000 m3, what is the total volume of the ice?

11. A stone weighs 460 N in air. When submerged in water, it weighs 300 N. Find the volume and specific
weight of the stone.

12. A vertical rectangular gate 1.5 m wide and 3 m high is submerged in water with its top edge 2 m below
the water surface. Find the total pressure acting on one side of the gate and its location from the bottom.

13. Assuming normal barometric pressure, how deep in the ocean is the point where an air bubble, upon
reaching the surface, has 5 times its volume than it had at the bottom?
14. A cylindrical tank having a diameter of 1.5 m and a height of 4 m is open at one end and closed at the
other end. It is placed below the water surface with its open end down. How deep below the water
surface should the tank be placed if the depth of the water inside the tank is 1.8 m?

15. Water having kinematic viscosity µK = 1.3 × 10−6 m/s flows in a 100 mm diameter pipe at a velocity
4.5 m/s. Compute the Reynolds number.

16. Oil has a specific gravity of 0.80 flows in a 200 mm diameter pipe. Find the critical velocity if µD =
8.14 × 10−2 Pa-s.

17. An engineer needs to deliver 150 ft3/min of water in a round pipe in such a way that the flow in the
pipe remains laminar. If the critical Reynolds number is 2000, what diameter of pipe is necessary to
ensure laminar flow? (Note: kinematic viscosity of water is 4.75 × 10−5 ft2/s). Assume that the flow in
the pipe will be uniform.

18. The diameter of a pipe at the larger end is 0.50 cm and at the smaller end is 0.20 cm. The larger and
smaller ends are located 7 meters and 3 meters respectively from the datum line. If at the larger end,
the velocity is 1.2 meters per second and the pressure is 5200 kN/m 2, compute the pressure at the
smaller end.

19. If the velocity of flow in a 75-mm diameter fire hose is 0.50 m/s, what is the velocity in a 25 mm
diameter jet issuing from a nozzle attached at the end of the pipe? Compute also the power available in
the jet.

20. A uniform area jet travels to 600 ft/sec ad a 100 ft/sec. What is the horizontal force acting on the water
jet if it undergoes a 180° turn?

21. An opening is made at the bottom of a dam 144 ft high. Find the approximate velocity of the water that
will flow through the opening if friction is neglected.

22. What is the velocity of sound in 150 ℉ water if its density is 61.2 lbm/ft3 and the bulk modulus of
elasticity is 328,000 psi?
