Robotics
Robotics is the science of 1_____. The first robot was a mechanical bird built more than 2,300 years ago by the
Greek mathematician Archytas. In the 15th century, Leonardo da Vinci designed the first robot that looked like a
human. However, robots didn’t become popular until the 1960s, when American car companies 2_____ in their
factories. After that robots continued to develop and today we use them not only in the car industry, but also in
medicine, science, space exploration and even entertainment.
In recent years, schools, science museums and other institutions 3_____ where anyone can learn how to design a
robot. There are a lot of robotics competitions for young people, too. One of the biggest is the First Global
Challenge – an international competition for students aged 15 to 18. In 2017 more than 160 teams from 150
countries participated in the competition, including a team from the Kyiv Polytechnic Lyceum in Ukraine.
The three members of the team 4_____ and teach it to identify the difference in colour between blue and orange
balls and to separate then into different places. It may not sound very difficult, but the students had to work out

team’s robot worked best in a series of tests over two days. The Ukrainian team did very well and came 19 th in
the competition.
The aim of the First Global Challenge goes beyond a competition. The organisers want to inspire students, and

global challenges.
