AB de Villiers

Good evening, everyone,

It’s a privilege to stand here and talk about something that has
defined my life—cricket. Today, I want to share my story, not just
to look back, but to inspire you to give this wonderful game a try.

I was born in Warmbad, South Africa, in 1984, into a sporty

family. As a kid, I loved playing anything and everything—tennis,
rugby, swimming, even golf. But cricket was the game that
captured my heart. It had everything I loved: competition,
strategy, and the joy of working together with teammates.

My journey in cricket began in school, and I was lucky to have

incredible support from my family, friends, and coaches. I made
my debut for South Africa in 2004, and from that day, my life
changed. Cricket took me places I never dreamed of, taught me
lessons I could never learn in a classroom, and gave me
memories I will cherish forever.

People often know me as "Mr. 360" because of my batting style,

but the truth is, I didn’t plan to be that kind of player. Cricket
taught me to adapt, to think outside the box, and to embrace
challenges. Whether it was scooping a fast bowler over the
wicketkeeper’s head or smashing a spinner into the stands, I
played with freedom and creativity because that’s what cricket
allows you to do.
But cricket is not just about the runs you score or the games you
win. It’s about what the game teaches you. Cricket taught me
teamwork—the understanding that no matter how good you are,
you can’t win alone. Some of my best moments were not about
individual achievements but about celebrating with my
teammates.

Cricket also taught me resilience. There were days when nothing

went my way—matches where I failed, and games we lost. But
those moments made me stronger. They taught me to fight
harder and keep pushing forward.

And, most importantly, cricket gave me a sense of connection.

The roar of the crowd at Wanderers, the chants in Chinnaswamy,
the energy of fans across the world—it’s a feeling I can’t describe.
Cricket has a unique way of bringing people together, uniting us
beyond boundaries and languages.

In 2018, I decided to retire from international cricket. It was a

tough decision, but I wanted to spend more time with my family,
who have always been my greatest supporters. Even after
retiring, cricket remains a big part of my life. It’s a game that
stays with you, no matter where you go or what you do.

So why am I telling you this? Because I believe cricket has

something to offer everyone. You don’t have to be a professional
or the best player on the field. Cricket teaches you life lessons—
about discipline, teamwork, and perseverance—that you can
carry with you forever.

Whether you’re playing in a stadium, a backyard, or a dusty

street, cricket is for everyone. It’s a game that challenges you,
rewards you, and fills your life with joy. I encourage each one of
you to pick up a bat or a ball and start playing. Who knows?
Maybe cricket will change your life too.

Thank you, and remember—play your game, enjoy the journey,

and always give it your best.

Thank you
