7th Grade - All Summer Reading 20-21

The McAllen ISD summer reading assignment for 7th graders aims to foster a love of reading by encouraging students to choose at least one novel or book of their interest. Research indicates that summer reading can enhance reading achievement and confidence, while also preventing reading loss during vacation. Students are required to maintain a reading log documenting their experiences, and suggested book choices include titles like 'Ghost' by Jason Reynolds and 'The Wednesday Wars' by Gary D. Schmidt.

Summer Reading Assignment

Purpose of Summer Reading

The purpose of summer reading in middle school is to foster a love of reading and develop students’ ability to
choose books that interest them. Students are required to read at least one novel or book of their choosing. If
needed, students can choose one of the books suggested in the links below or can choose a book from the grade
level suggestion lists on the pages that follow.

By allowing choice, we hope to encourage students to become independent readers and develop their reading
identities. In addition, the required reading will give students a shared reading experience that will enable them
to participate in rich discussions and meaningful conversations with their teachers and peers.

Research:
● Studies show that students who participate in summer reading programs show increased reading
achievement scores as well as increased confidence in the classroom (Booktalking: Avoiding Summer
Drift).
● Students who don’t read during summer vacation lose two to three months of reading achievement
(“The Effects of Summer Vacation on Achievement Test Scores”).
● Students who read five to six books over the summer don’t suffer from that summer reading loss
(“Summer Reading and the Ethnic Achievement Gap“).

Selecting Books

We encourage students to read books that they find intriguing, challenging, and interesting. We hope students
find a series of books that hooks them and diverse books that allow them to experience the world through a
different perspective. If you can’t quite decide what to read, feel free to choose a book from the short lists on the
pages that follow.

Furthermore, we encourage parents to be actively involved in the selection of the books to make
sure students choose the books that are “just right” for them and their family values.

Possible Book Choices:

The Ultimate Backseat Bookshelf for Kids 9-14

The 100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time

Assessments:

● All students will be required to keep a reading log where they will document their summer reading
experiences.

the team, or will his past finally catch up to him?

The Wednesday Wars- Gary D. Schmidt

Meet Holling Hoodhood, a seventh-grader at Camillo Junior High, who must spend Wednesday afternoons

Holling to be on his best behavior, but how can Holling stay out of trouble when he must face a bully, angry
rats, and a baseball hero signing autographs the same night Holling has to appear in a play in yellow tights! As
