Introduction to TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)

TEFL refers to the teaching of English to people who do not speak it as their native
language. It is usually taught in countries where English is not the primary language, such
as China, Japan, or Pakistan. TEFL focuses on developing students’ reading, writing,
listening, and speaking skills. Teachers use different methods and strategies to help
learners understand and communicate effectively in English.

Foreign Language vs. Second Language

A foreign language is a language learned in a country where it is not spoken as a native

language. For example, English is a foreign language in China because people do not use it
in daily life.

A second language is a language learned in a country where it is spoken and used regularly.
For example, English is a second language in Pakistan because it is used in education,
business, and government.

In simple words:

A foreign language is learned for communication with people outside the country.

A second language is learned for communication within the country.

TEFL in Pakistan
In Pakistan, English is an important language for education, government, and business.
Many schools and universities teach English, and it is often required for higher education
and job opportunities. However, there are challenges in TEFL in Pakistan, such as:

Lack of trained teachers – Many English teachers are not professionally trained.

Limited resources – Many schools lack proper books and teaching materials.

Focus on memorization – Instead of learning English through communication, students

often focus on memorizing grammar rules and vocabulary.

Code-switching – Many students mix English with Urdu or their regional language, making it
difficult to practice pure English.

Despite these challenges, TEFL in Pakistan is growing due to online learning, language
institutes, and government initiatives to improve English education.

Language Acquisition vs. Language Learning

Language Acquisition: This is how children learn their first language naturally. They pick up
the language by hearing it from their parents and surroundings, without studying grammar
or rules.

Language Learning: This happens when someone learns a language through formal
education, such as in a classroom. It requires studying grammar, vocabulary, and
practicing speaking and writing.

For example:

A child learning Urdu by listening to family members is language acquisition.

A student learning English in school by studying grammar and doing exercises is language
learning.

Overview of Language Learning Theories

There are different theories that explain how people learn languages. Here are some of the
most important ones:
Behaviorist Theory (B.F. Skinner)

Learning a language is like forming a habit.

People learn by repetition, practice, and reinforcement (reward and punishment).

Example: A child says “thank you,” and the parents praise them, so they repeat it.

Innatist Theory (Noam Chomsky)

Humans are born with a special ability to learn languages.

The brain has a “Language Acquisition Device” (LAD) that helps children learn language
naturally.

Example: A child learns grammar rules even without formal teaching.

Cognitive Theory (Jean Piaget)

Language learning is related to thinking and understanding.

Children learn language when they develop their mental abilities.

Example: A child learns words for objects after understanding what they are.

Social Interactionist Theory (Lev Vygotsky)

Language is learned through interaction with others.

Talking with parents, teachers, and friends helps in learning a language.

Example: A child learns new words by talking with their teacher.

Constructivist Theory (Jerome Bruner)

Language learning is an active process.

Learners build their understanding by connecting new words with their experiences.

Example: A student learns the word “apple” by seeing and touching an apple.
Communicative Approach

Language should be learned for communication, not just for grammar and rules.

Speaking and listening practice is important.

Example: In a classroom, students practice conversations instead of just memorizing

words.

Conclusion

Understanding TEFL, language acquisition, and language learning theories helps in better
language teaching. Teachers should use different methods based on these theories to
make language learning easier and more effective for students.
