These full color scale model plans will add amazing realism to a diorama or railroading scene, and yet
they are very inexpensive and easy to construct. Simply download to your computer (they're in easy-to-
use PDF file format); print them out (on A4 or letter paper), glue on to some cardstock (old cereal boxes
are perfect), corflute, or foam board; fold and glue together. They're fun to build and are pre-weathered
to photo-realistic standards (no painting required).

The website has step-by-step tutorials on the HOME PAGE for making both 3D and background struc-
tures as well as several helpful video at https://www.modelbuildings.org/videos-ideas
The ModelBuildings.org website has a wide selection of unique international designs suitable for a range
of eras and geographical locations.
Many designs can be constructed as 3D models (with 4 sides and a roof), whilst others are designed as
space-saving “low relief” buildings suitable for positioning against backdrops to make the scene appear
more realistic and appear to stretch into the distance.
These plans are very versatile and you can use a variety of construction methods and add extra internal
support such as foam board, corflute, or card if you want.

Strips of balsa wood are inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to cut, shape, paint and glue together to resemble exposed
timber posts, and supports as seen in some models above. Most stores that stock a range of balsa wood have it in long
thin 36" strips suitable for making posts and trestles for scale models. Popular sizes in 36 inch strips include:
1/8" x 1/8" (4mm x 4mm), 3/16" x 3/16" (5mm x 5mm), and 1/4" x 1/4" (6mm x 6mm).

Low-relief buildings can provide amazing perspective & dimension to any
model railroad layout. They are typically 3 sided buildings (with part of the
roof visible), so as to give the illusion of being full-depth 3D buildings.
Depending on your space requirements; you can adapt them to be just
one-sided revealing only the front of the building. These structures are
commonly positioned on the horizon set against a background sky or
scene, or on the outer edge of a layout.
They will provide a superbly realistic
backdrop running along the edge giving
the illusion that the scene stretches
further than in reality it does. Corflute
(the stuff real estate signs are made
from), Card, or Foam Board are perfect
construction materials.
