the month of December and were billed as presenting The Dark
Continent of Science and the Light Side of Nature, and The
Tenth Wonder of the World.
The printed programmes for the Victor André Variety Show
listed the complete repertoire for the week, from which selections
were made each evening, thus ensuring that there would be, as
advertised, “Great Changes of Programme Each Evening”, a
feature that was sometimes mentioned in newspaper reports. As
an example, we may take an 1898 programme, which, although
undated, can be placed because Mr W.B. Moseley, the protean
artiste, toured with the André company from the beginning of
September until 3 December of that year.
A pianoforte solo by Mr J. Somerville Ellis opened the
proceedings and then Victor André appeared with his Séance
Magique. This comprised sleight of hand with coins,
handkerchiefs and the like, as a prelude to Silent Thought
Transmission demonstrated between himself and his wife before
a committee selected by the audience to watch that no signs
were given or a word spoken.
A Skirt Dance by Miss May Murray provided the first of the
supporting acts, succeeded by the versatile Mr W.B. Moseley,
comedian, actor impersonator, lyric vocalist and premier facial
artiste. He presented Twenty Minutes at Madame Tussaud’s,
Faces under One Hat (chapeaugraphy), and the following Vocal
Descriptive Scena: Napoleon Exiled, Imitations Farcical and
Dramatic of Mr Henry Irving, Mr Wilson Barrett, Mr Barry Sullivan
and Mr J.L. Toole.
Victor André then returned with a Ventriloquial Sketch, to be
followed by Dioramic Views of All the World, specially painted
by André’s own Artist, which led to the New ‘Bioscope’,
described as “A Machine for projecting Animated Pictures of the
latest and best invention, with all latest improvements”.
Miss May Murray’s second spot on the programme was a
Danse Lumineuse and a Kaleidoscope Dance, and Mr Moseley’s
second appearance was in a Character Sketch. The show ended
with Mrs André’s Dream Visions.
So that there might be no misunderstanding, the programme
stated, “due to its length, not all the items would be presented
each night but all would be seen during the week”. A second
note claimed, “the various Feats, Tricks and Illusions performed
by Mr Victor André were of his own invention and
construction”.
The following year of 1899 embraced a long season at the
Free Trade Hall in Manchester, from March into May, but other
venues have not been found, which may well tie in with the
statement referred to previously regarding André’s retirement
from touring with a variety company. And in 1900 the only
reference to the Andrés located is aquatic and recreational,
relating to the Swimming Events at Paignton Regatta. The Exeter
Flying Post recorded that Victor André came third, as did Victor
Junior in the Boys’ contest.
The family’s fondness for South Devon is reflected by a note
in the February 1902 issue of Stanyon’s Magic, that Mr Victor
André had settled down in Torquay.
