IV. Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it. 10X1=10

The Olympic games were an important event in ancient Greece. Now nearly ten thousand athletes from over one
hundred countries take part in the dozens of events held once in every four years. These games are open to
athletes of every nation. They compete for the love of sports and not for money.
The first Modern Olympic games were held in the Greek capital, Athens, in 1896. Fewer than three hundred
athletes from just twelve countries took part in them. The main attraction of these games was the ‘Marathan’.
This race was so named to honour a Greek runner who, centuries ago,ran twenty- six miles from battlefield at
Marathan to Athens with news of a great victory.
In the first few Olympics, America was the most successful nation in winning the gold medals but soon the
Europeans gained more success. Perhaps, the most remarkable progress was made by Finland. The long- distance
runner of Finland were supreme for two decades. At Helsinki, Finland in 1952 the Russians competed in the
Olympics for the first time. They put up a strong challenge for the Americans participants. In the last thirty years,
African athletes as well as the Chinese athletes have become strong competitors in the Olympic games. The 2004
Olympic Games were held in Athens, where they originated from.
For many years, women were excluded from the Olympic competition. However, despite great opposition, they
were finally admitted to the 1924 Games in Paris, France. They are achieving equal standards to those of men.
