G+3 Residential Building Structural Analysis and Design Report

1. INTRODUCTION

This is a structural design report of G+3 residential building to be built in Addis Ababa city, Ethiopia. In general,
structural design deals with framework of building structures such as columns, beams, walls, and footings.

2. DESIGN BASIS AND METHODOLOGY

2.1 Code and standards

Serviceability limit state design method was used for member sizing and designing. The codes used are:
Ethiopian Building Code Standard (ES EN-1)
Ethiopian Building Code Standard (ES EN-8)
Ethiopian Building Code Standard (ESCP-1), and
Euro Code 2- 2004 (as used by the software), Similar to ES EN-2, 1992

2.2. Units
The following units have been used in the entire design and any values of length force or stress will be converted
to this system:
Length: m (meters)
Force: kN (kilo Newton)
Stresses: MPa (N/mm2)

2.3. Software & Interpretation

i. ETABS and MS-EXCELL
ETABS V9.7 was used for the analysis and design of the building by modeling as a 3-D space frame. This model
acts the same way as the real structure acts giving the exact deflection, member moments, stress, member forces
and reactions.
The major input data are:
Material property data (concrete & reinforcement bar)
 Concrete section property (definition of different sizes of beams, columns, and shell slab).
 Loading cases & Load combination.
The major outputs are:
 Frame out puts
 Beam reinforcement

DESIGNED BY MUHAMMED TAFA. Page 2

G+3 Residential Building Structural Analysis and Design Report

 Joint reactions
Note that: The reinforcement versus frame Ids' are to be referred to the graphical Ids' attached.
 Foundation reaction
Output & Interpretation
 Beams are designed by software and rechecked with the local code results.
 Columns are designed using Software and rechecked by frame outputs in combination with ES EN 1992
Charts.

ii. EXCEL -2010

This spread sheet program has been used:

i.) To perform analysis of the loading on the slab,
ii.) To analyze & design the concrete stair case,
iii.) To design Footing after an analysis result is obtained from ETABS software,

2.4. Design Criteria

2.4.1. Material
Steel Strength: The yield strength for deformed reinforcement bar shall be S-300 for diameter less than 10
and S-420 for diameter above 10 with minimum yield strength.
Concrete Strength: Concrete strength is classified according to minimum 28 days crashing compressive
strength of 150mm cubes in N/mm2. All Structural concrete members are designed with C-25 Concrete
comprehensive strength.

2.5. Geometrical Criteria

The structure is consisting of solid slab floor system supported by beams. Reinforced concrete column is
used to take all vertical and lateral loads and isolated footings are used as a foundation.
In brief, the structural system comprises:
• Solid slab: This solid slab system is used for all floor and C.I.S roof finish.
• Beam:
o Grade beams are with a depth of 400mm and width of 250mm
o Floor beams are with a depth of 400mm and width of 250mm.
o Landing beams are with a depth of 400mm and width of 250mm.
o Roof beams are with depth of 400mm and width of 250mm.

DESIGNED BY MUHAMMED TAFA. Page 3

G+3 Residential Building Structural Analysis and Design Report

• Columns: Different size of column sections is used based on structural requirement.

• Stair: Stair designed here is a reinforced concrete structure.
The whole structure was analyzed as 3-D frame by modeling every structural member including the slab &
stairs.

2.6. Loading
Addis Ababa is located in the area of seismic zone (Zone 3) according to ES EN-8, 1992 earthquake loading
is considered in addition to vertical loading.
Vertical loading: - Dead Load (DL-Self Weight, partition Load and Finishing Load)
- Live load (LL)
Lateral loading: - Earthquake load (EQ) in the critical directions.
The above loadings make up a total of six different combinations.

No Combination Name Factored loading combination

Vertical Lateral
1. Combo1 1.35DL + 1.5LL -
2 .Combo2 DL +0.6LL + EQx +0.3EQy
3 .Combo3 DL +0.6LL + EQy -0.3EQx
4. Combo4 DL +0.6LL - EQx +0.3EQy
5. Combo5 DL +0.6LL - EQy +0.3EQx
6. Combo6 DL +0.6LL + EQx -0.3EQy -
7. Combo7 DL +0.6LL + EQy +0.3EQx -
8. Combo8 DL +0.6LL - EQy -EQy -
9. Combo9 DL +0.6LL - EQy -EQx -
10. Combo10 DL +LL
Out of the five combinations critical case was taken for the analysis and design of beams, slab and columns.
The footing was analyzed and designed for service load (combo 10) for Allowable bearing capacity 550 kpa
taken from geotechnical report.

3. Structural System Lay out

The structural system consists of solid slab with beam-column frame systems. Reinforced concrete columns of
different section were used to support all the loads from the beams and transfer to the foundation system. Floor
beams with section 250x400mm were used to support the slabs and transfer the load to the columns. Grade
beams with 250*400mm section were used to arrest lateral movement of the building in an event of an

earthquake and resist differential foundation settlement. The footings at1.7m depths from the ground floor level
were considered according to geotechnical recommendation.

From ES EN 1998-1-1: 2015

For Column
Vd =Ned/(Ac*fcd)
Ac=300*350
fcd=11.333MPa
Ned= 1445
Let take the maximum axial load of the column,

Vd= (1445*1000/(11.333*300*350)

9. FOOTING DESIGN
9.1. Bearing Capacity Recommendation and Foundation Selection
Bearing capacity recommendations: the allowable bearing capacity of soil is taken from geotechnical
Report which is all =440Kpa. Isolated footing was used as a foundation at a depth of 2 m from the Natural
ground level. Isolated footing is designed by using MS-EXCELL based on ETABs output.
