1. You are provided with the following

AB: A solution containing 1.86g mixture of NaOH and Na2 CO3 in 400cm3 of
solution.
AC: A solution made by dissolving 3.17cm3 of solution of commercial HNO3 in
solution to make 500cm3 of solution. The specific gravity of commercial HNO3
and percentage assey are 1.42g/cm3 and 72% respectively.
Phenolphthalein indicator (POP)
Methyl Orange indicator (MO)
Procedure:
(i) Pipette 20 or 25cm3 of AB in a conical flask. Add to it three drops of POP.
(ii) Put AC in the burette and titrate AB in the conical flask against AC in the burette,
until there is colour change. Record the burette reading.
(iii) To the same solution in the conical flask add four drops of MO and continue
titrating until there is colour change. Record the burette reading.
(iv) Repeat procedure (i) to (iii) three more times and tabulate your results
Summary:
cm3 of AB required cm3 of AC during POP and cm3 of
AC during MO to complete the reaction.
Questions:
(a) The colour change during POP was from cm3 to cm3 and
during MO was from cm3 to cm3 .
(b) Calculate the molarity of solution AC (HNO3 ) used during titration
(c) Calculate the mass of each NaOH and Na2 CO3 in 400cm3 of base solution.

2. You are provided with

A: A solution containing 10g of oxalic acid (H2 C2 O4 · 2H2 O) in 1M of 1dm3 of
solution of H2 SO4
B: 0.02M potassium permanganate solution.
Stop watch
Procedure:
(i) Measure 20cm3 of A and put in small glass beaker, add to it 20cm3 of B and
immediately start the stop watch.
Stop the stop watch when the solution become just colourless. Record the time.
(ii) Measure 15cm3 of A, add to it 5cm3 of distilled water, then put in a small glass
beaker. Add to it 20cm3 of B and immediately start the stop watch. Stop the
stop watch when the solution is just colourless. Record the time.
(iii) Repeat the procedures using volume as shown in the table below;

S/N Vol. of A (cm3 ) Vol. of B(cm3 ) Vol. of water(cm3 ) Time, t sec 1 −1

t sec
1 20 20 0
2 15 20 5
3 20 13 7
4 15 20 5

(a) Copy and complete the table of results

(b) Calculate the order of reaction with respect to each Mn2+ and C2 O2−
4 by using
initial rate method.
(c) Calculate the value of rate constant, K

3. Salt P containing two cations and two anions perform the following experiments to
deduce the cations and anions

S/N Experiment observations Inferences

1 Take two spatulaful of salt P and
put in a test tube, add enough
water then heat gently to boiling.
Decant and filter using filter paper
to obtain a filtrate and residue, to
filtrate add little water and divide
into four portions. To the first
portion of filtrate solution add
NaOH till excess.
2 To second portion of filtrate add
NH3 solution till excess
3 To third portion add lead acetate
followed by ethanoic acid.
4 To fourth portion, of filtrate
solution add potassium
ferocyanide solution
5 Wash the residue in (1) above then
dissolve with dilute HCl. Add
little water to resulting solution
and divide into three portions.
6 To first portion add NaOH solution
till excess
7 To second portion add NH3
solution till excess
8 To third portion of residue solution
add NH3 solution followe by
ammonium oxalate solution.

Conclusion
Cations in salt P are and
Anions in salt P are and
