ㅇThe Justification of Athletes' Pay: Effort, Scarcity, and Influence

3116 - Jee Woo Garam

Do you know how much athletes get paid? The annual pay per person for Korean

athletes is approximately ₩231,588,000. Some people think that athletes are

overpaid. However, because very few people can be athletes, they work just as hard as other

professionals, and they have been working hard for a long time, they are being paid fairly

for their work.

Athletes work just as hard as any other people with regular jobs. Students who are

preparing to be doctors usually spend more than 7 to 11 hours a day studying. In comparison,

students who want to be soccer players train for over 8 hours every day. Considering the total

hours invested, most students have spent less time studying and practicing than athlete

trainees, who have devoted their time since elementary school.

The time athletes spend working on their jobs is comparable with or even exceeds that

of other people. Some think athletes earn money easily by simply playing a game, but

athletes have long, intense training periods before their matches. Furthermore, they must

devote much more time and energy than normal jobs, because they manage their physical

condition and their nutrition. This is a special type of effort, especially when compared with

other occupations. They place a lot of effort in maintaining their physical condition, whether

it be by controlling their intake of protein, carbohydrates and fats, or by being careful about

meal timing and portion size. A proper meal before a match not only increases performance

but also reduces the risk of injuries. They even they pay special attention to their water
intake. Thus, this shows that athletes are working hard in their field, especially in comparison

with other professionals.

When it comes to the nature of the athletes, only a few people are able to do the job.

Because of them, a small group of athletes receive large salaries - this is not decided

artificially. In practice, only 0.8% of children who start playing soccer in elementary school

can join K-League teams. Moreover, athletes occupy important positions in society, where

they are able to influence many people. As a result, athletes are paid a lot of money for

participating in activities such as sponsorships with sports brands. Special things like brand

deals are provided to athletes, enabling small numbers of them to receive high income. For

this reason, there is no choice but for athletes to earn a lot of money.

Considering their efforts, their impact and influence, it is difficult to say that the pay

of athletes is unjustified. From a young age, they have worked hard and spent their time to

maintain their physical condition, and even after becoming athletes, they have spent many

hours maintaining their bodies in optimal condition. Moreover, they survive in a field with

difficult competition and have great influence in society. Therefore the pay they receive is

very justified.
