361 Introduction

Sampling distribution is the probability distribution of a sample statistic across repeated samples from the same population, providing insights into the variability of the statistic. It is essential for making inferences about population parameters, allowing researchers to estimate population means, create confidence intervals, and perform hypothesis testing. Understanding sampling distributions enhances the reliability and accuracy of sample-based estimates.

Sampling distribution is the probability distribution of a given sample

statistic (like the mean, proportion, or variance) over many repeated
samples drawn from the same population. It represents how a statistic,
such as the sample mean, varies across different samples, providing
critical insights into the variability of the statistic and helping us make
inferences about the population.

The concept of sampling distributions is foundational in statistics as it allows for

inference from sample data to population parameters. By understanding how a sample LIVE Technical
support
statistic, like the sample mean or proportion, behaves across repeated samples,
researchers gain insight into the reliability and accuracy of their sample-based estimates
and can make valid conclusions about the larger population.

This sampling distribution allows us to:

Estimate the population mean.

Create confidence intervals around the sample mean to estimate the range within
which the true population mean likely falls.
Perform hypothesis testing to see if the sample mean differs significantly from a
hypothesized mean.
