Pass 2.0 50-54 Conditional Pass 40-49 1.0 <40 Fail F 0.0 The above table is
required by the University of Juba, but students should note that many
graduate schools use a tougher grading model. For example where the A
range is from 90-100, B range from 80-90, C range from 70- 80 and D range
from 60-70. This is especially important for students interested in pursuing
additional degrees where the graduate schools they are applying to convert
applicant GPAs to a standard model. Promotions In order to graduate,
students must maintain a certain CGPA and pass all of the core courses. The
paragraphs below describe these requirements in more detail. Master's
Degree Students: To graduate, Master's degree students must have a CGPA
2.50 (with no "Es"). Master's degree students must have a CGPA of 2.50 or
higher to be promoted to the second year. Students who do not meet this
requirement, but who have a CGPA between 2.00 and 2.50, will be allowed to
leave the School after the first year with a post-graduate diploma. Master's
degree students who faila course in their first year, but have a CGPA of 2.50
will be promoted to the next year with the following notation in their
transcript: "promoted with carry-over." These students will be allowed to re-
take the course they failed in later academic years. Students will only be
allowed to repeat a course once. Master's degree students who faila course
in their second year, but have a CGPA of 2.50, will be allowed to re-take the
course they failed the following academic year. They will be awarded a
degree when they pass al the core courses (with a CGPA of 2.50 or higher).
Students will only be allowed to repeat a course once. Students should note
that potential employers and other stakeholders require transcripts (not just
degrees) when assessing performance. Consequently, they will know if a
student graduated with avsrag marks. Students should also note that
graduate school requirements are currently being reviewed by the Seretariat
for Graduate Studies and are subject to change. Certificate and Executive
Programs: The requirements vary for successful completion of certificate
courses and executive programs. Please see relevant syllabi / materials for
more information. August 2023 7

ACADEMICS Academic Year The Schoo's academic year generally runs from
late-August until mid-May, The first semester usually runs from late-August
until mid-December. The second semester runs from late-January until mid-
May. Each semester includes approximately 14 weeks of instruction, a
reading week, and a week for exams. Attendance A student with less than
75% attendance will not be allowed to sit for the final exam and will be given
an "P" in that course. In cases where a final paper substitutes for a final
exam, a student with less than 75% attendance will not be allowed to submit
a final paper and will be given (F' in that course. In rare cases, a student who
has missed 25% to 35% of classes may be allowed to take the final exam (or
submit a final paper) if they have legitimate excuses for being absent. In
these cases, they must submit a request to the School's Academic Board, via
a course instructor, which will make the final decision about the case.
Excused absences still count as absences. Students are already permitted to
miss 25% of classes because the University understands that unforeseen
circumstances like illness, bereavement, or work commitments may require
students to miss some classes. SPS is strict about attendance as a matter of
fairness and accountability SPS courses are also designed for experienced
students. They involve small-group work, discussions, and lectures that
students simply cannot "make-up'" outside of class. This type of learning
only happens in the class-room and cannot be replicated outside of it.
Grading The School of Public Service is a professional school focused on
developing mindset and skillsets. Most classes integrate individual and small
group exercises. To encourage participation and to reinforce the importance
of this applied work, we use the following grading model: Attendance: 10%
Ongoing work/continuous assessment (e.g., homework, class exercises):
30%-50% Final exam/paper: 60% – 40% In some classes, weightings may
vary from the above with the approval of the School's Academic Board.
Grade Point Average Calculations Student grade point averages (GPAs) are
calculated to three decimal places and then ounded up to two decimal
places. GPAs are weighted according to the number of credit hours in each
course, as well as the total number of credit hours. The following table
describes the University of luba's grading system:
