Class 5 (FA-2)

CHAPTER 4
SOLIDS ,LIQUIDS AND GASES
Answer the following
questions:
Q1. Why is air a matter?
Ans. Air is a matter because it
has mass and it occupies
space.
Q2. Which form of matter has
a definite shape?
Ans. Solids have a definite
shape.
Q3. Why do solids expand on
heating?
Ans. On heating a substance,
the movement of particles
increases and the space
between them also increases.
So , the solids expand on
heating.
Q4. Name two solid
substances?
Ans. Wood, iron rod, book.
Q5. Name the particles that
form matter.
Ans. Molecules.
Q6. Name two matter that can
flow.
Ans. Liquids and gases can
flow.
Q7. What is a physical change?
Ans. When the change occurs
only in the shape, size and
state of matter, it is called a
physical change. It is a
temporary change and can be
reversed easily. For example-
evaporation, melting and
freezing of water are all
physical changes.
Q8. Why does the size of a
substance increase on heating?
Ans. On heating a substance,
the movement of particles
(molecules) increases and the
space between them also
increases. So the substance
expands on heating.
Q9. Write two properties of
solids?
Ans. The two properties of
solids are:-
1) Solids are hard.
2) Solids have definite shape
and volume.
Q10. Write two properties of
gases.
Ans. The two properties of
gases are:-
1) Gases can flow.
2)They do not have definite
volume or definite shape.
Q11. Liquids adjust their size
and shape to any type of
container in which they are
kept.
A) How can a liquid take the
shape of the container in
which it is kept?
Ans. The forces between
liquid particles are weaker
than solids but stronger than
gases. That is why the
molecules of liquid slide over
each other. So, they flow and
take the shape of its
container.
B) What do you learn from
liquids?
Ans . From liquids ,we have
learnt to be flexible and
adjustable in any situation of
life .
Q12. Describe arrangement of
molecules in solids and liquids.
Ans. SOLIDS:- In solids the
molecules are very closely
packed .They cannot move
away from each other due to
strong forces of attraction
between them.
LIQUIDS:-In liquids, the
molecules are not very close to
each other due to weak force
of attraction between them.
So, molecules of liquids can
move and slide over each
other.
Q13. What happens to the
particles of water when
heated?
Ans . Water molecules absorb
heat energy and start moving
faster. They break the forces of
attraction between them and
gets changed into water
vapour.
Q14 . When your mother cooks
food you can smell the food
across the house ,why?
Ans . It is because the
molecules in a gas are far away
from each other .The force of
attraction is weakest in them
and they are free to move .So
you can smell the food across
the house.
Q15 . What kind of change is
there in the following
activities: physical or
chemical?
a) sharpening a pencil-
physical change
b) Burning a matchstick-
chemical change
c) Curdling of milk by adding
lemon juice- chemical
change
d) Cutting potatoes into small
pieces- physical change.
