Enhancing Literacy: DepEd's Catch-Up Friday Program
BERNADETH G. CUYAO Teacher III Agbannawag Elementary School
The Department of Education (DepEd) is responsible for meeting Filipino children's
educational needs. One of its recent efforts, the Catch-Up Friday Program, seeks to improve kids' reading skills. DepEd created the Catch-Up Friday Program in response to the problems that Filipino students encounter in achieving reading competency. According to research, reading proficiency is a key indicator of academic performance and lifetime learning (OECD 2010). However, many Filipino students fail to read, which has a severe impact on their overall academic performance and future prospects. DepEd's Catch-Up Friday Program seeks to give targeted help to students who require more assistance in developing their reading abilities. The Catch-Up Friday Program is a remedial reading intervention that takes place every Friday in DepEd schools countrywide. On Catch-Up Fridays, students participate in guided reading exercises aimed at improving their literacy skills. These activities could include guided reading sessions, phonics training, vocabulary building tasks, and comprehension tactics. Teachers often use formative assessment data to evaluate kids' individual reading needs and customize lessons accordingly. The program also promotes parental involvement with home- based reading activities and family literacy programs. Guided reading sessions, phonics instruction, vocabulary development tasks, and comprehension tactics are all integrated into literacy instruction to provide a complete approach to helping students' reading development. By focusing on the fundamental components of reading competency - decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension - educators may assist struggling readers in developing essential literacy skills and becoming more confident, proficient readers. These features are critical components of effective remedial reading programs, such as DepEd's Catch-Up Friday Program, which strives to give targeted assistance to kids in need of literacy intervention. Preliminary evaluations of the Catch-Up Friday Program point to positive results in terms of student reading competency. According to Department of Education statistics, participating students improve their reading fluency, comprehension, and general literacy skills significantly. Teachers also report greater student involvement, enthusiasm, and confidence in reading. These findings are consistent with previous studies emphasizing the value of focused treatments and tailored training in enhancing reading outcomes (Hattie 2009). By dedicating time and resources to remedial reading support, the Catch-Up Friday Program serves students' different learning needs and develops a culture of continual improvement in literacy education. Several studies show that remedial reading programs improve learner’s literacy skills. According to Slavin et al. (2009), focused interventions such as small-group tutoring and intense phonics instruction resulted in significant increases in reading achievement. Similarly, Torgesen et al. (2001) found that struggling readers benefit from early intervention and explicit training in phonological awareness and decoding skills. These findings highlight the relevance of evidence- based approaches and individualized instruction in meeting children' unique learning requirements. DepEd's Catch-Up Friday Program represents a strategic initiative to address the literacy needs of Filipino students and promote equitable access to quality education. By providing targeted remedial reading support, the program aims to improve reading proficiency among struggling readers and enhance overall academic achievement. Supported by related literature highlighting the effectiveness of remedial reading interventions, the Catch-Up Friday Program exemplifies DepEd's commitment to fostering literacy and empowering learners to reach their full potential.
