As promised this is the first review to prove my point.

I want to clear that my reviews are

not like the routine reviews .I will analyze the movie with reference to prevailing socio
political situation in the country and our cultural and social heritage.

Today’s movie is MOHABBAT AUR MEHNGAI, the cast and credit detail is
given at the end of the review. It was released on 6th August 1976.

Theme:
As the name shows, it is about inflation, high price of essential commodities and
unemployment .The main characters belong to middle class families .Nadeem has played
the role of an unemployed youth who is living alone in a hired house without any thing
except his educational certificates and a framed picture of his deceased mother .Kavita
and Ghulam Mohyuddin are brother and sisters and neighbor of Nadeem. Kavita loves
Nadeem and often help him with meals and money .Sangeeta is other neighbor who is
well educated and works in an office to support her family. Her mother wants to marry
her but due to jahez(dowry) she is unable to find a suitable bridegroom for her daughter.

The Socio-political situation:

When movie was released in 1976, Pakistan was governed
by Pakistan Peoples Party. The party slogan was Roti Kapra Aur Makan(Bread,Dress and
House for all)the Bhutto government nationalized all the major industrial institutions
creating an economic vacuum in the country. After the war of 1971 with India and the
dismemberment of the country and separation of East Pakistan as Bangladesh the new
Pakistan was facing great economic depression .the film theme portrayed the country
situation brilliantly.
On the socio cultural side, Pakistani society was under a rapid change due to urbanization
and foreign remittance coming from Middle East. Social values were changing. Women
were joining working force, but in the middle class it was still considered not good for
girls to work with men in offices.
Movie Analysis:
The first scene of the movie in which a thief enters Nadeem house and
finds nothing to steal, is a good stir on the prevailing society and unemployment Nadeem
tells him he has only his certificates and a picture of his mother both the things are
useless for the thief. He even gets a loan of two rupees from the thief and promised to
return it after getting a job. The name of the thief is Sharif ul Zaman(Good man of the
world)another pun to enjoy. the strength of the movie lies in the songs especially the one
at the last. Just have a look at the text,

Gharib bhooka ha roti talash karta ha

Amir bhooka ha kothi talash karta ha
Wah rib hook tera bhe jawab nahi.

(It is hunger that is most important. Hunger will never end. The poor wants bread and
rich wants palace, both are hungry)
In another song a girl says,

Umaariya beeti jai koi rishta na aye (The time is passing by and I am waiting for
marriage but as I am poor and cant afford dowry it is very difficult to get any proposal)

The unemployed but educated hero is forced to sell used cloths and he sings,

Nae sal ka tohfa bheja ha uncle tom ne(uncle tom has send gift for new year)

The lunda bazaar (the market of old used cloths) is a booming business now in Pakistan,
the majority of lower middle class purchase cloth to save themselves and their children
from cold. In 70’s lunda bazaar was emerging and getting popular.

On social values, the movie has very strong plot. When Shahnawaz come to Sangeeta’s
home proposing her, he asks her mother to allow sangeeta for a date, but sangeeeta
refuses the proposal by saying it is not considered good in our society to go out on a date.

Nadeem refuses to serve whisky in a restaurant and says it is haraam (not admissible) in
Islam to drink, sale and serve alcohol in any form. In 1976 whisky was allowed legally to
be served in restaurants.
