David Lang Task 1 Essay - Map
David Lang Task 1 Essay - Map
The diagram details a central library floor plan twenty years ago compared to the present day.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the library has a more open
layout and there is greater emphasis on technology, self-service, and recreation. All rooms
have been reorganized and only the entrance is unchanged.
Two decades ago, the most noticeable difference was two groupings of tables and chairs
immediately upon entering the library that are no longer there today. To the left of the chairs
there was a reading room that contained newspapers and magazines that has now been
transformed into a computer room. Above that there used to be adult fiction but now this
open area contains all the library’s reference books. The final rooms on the left side were
previously for media such as CDs, videos, and games but now the children’s area has moved
from the opposite corner and expanded to allow for sofas and storytelling events.
The former location of the children’s area on the upper left side of the library is now a room
for lectures which is directly above a space with adult fiction, a long information desk, and 3
self-service machines. The final addition is a café that has taken the place of an enquiry desk
for returns and other questions.
IELTS Cambridge 17 Essay: Proposed Plan
The map details a town now and a proposed future layout. Looking from an overall
perspective, it is readily apparent that the town has become more industrial and accessible
with additional roads though the majority of the town is largely unchanged in terms of the
structures.
In the present day, there is an airfield to the northwest which connects to a long street (A2)
that runs south. The road contains a roundabout from which another road leads east to bisect
a railway line near a gas station. The presented plan would move the roundabout slightly
south and the airfield would be replaced by an industrial estate with a new road going directly
east to the railway. The railway itself would also be interrupted by a new roundabout near the
same gas station.
IELTS Task 1 Essay: Building with 3 Maps
The floorplan shows how a building has changed from 1958 to the present day. Looking from
an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the building has served both commercial and
residential purposes with the only area remaining unchanged being the kitchen. At present,
the flower shop has a more open layout relative to when it was an apartment and office.
In 1958, the building was used as an office with a meeting room in the top left corner of the
floorplan, an assistant’s and secretary’s office below there and a toilet in the bottom left
corner. In 1985, the meeting room was extended and turned into a living room and a large
bathroom and shower took the place of the offices and toilet. The florist shop contained a gift
card room in the top left, above a large open space for flowers and a play area in the bottom
left corner.
On the right side, the kitchen in the top corner was unaltered across all iterations of the
ground floor. In comparison, there was a manager’s office on the right hand side and a
reception area in the bottom corner. These spaces were allocated for bedrooms in the
apartment and are now an office and additional space for flowers.
The maps illustrate an industrial area in Norbiton in the present day compared with
plans for future development of the site.
The above maps detail Norbiton in the present day and plans for future development.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the town will become less
industrial and more residential with the construction of facilities for housing, education,
shopping, and medical care. This development will occur primarily to the west and north with
only a small patch of farmland remaining undisturbed.
In the current town, there is a central roundabout surrounded by factories and a road running
from west to east out of Norbiton. In the future, the roundabout will remain but the factories
around it will become shops, new housing will line a northwestern road, and there will be a
new hospital built to the southeast. The original road going to the east will also now have
housing on either side along with a large playground to the north and a school at the
easternmost border of the town.
Outside the center of the town, there are also plans for a smaller roundabout in the south
which will bisect an existing street. In the north, there will be a bridge over the river and the
farmland to the north will be partly replaced with housing, though not to the east where no
alterations will be made.
