Practice Problems - Tape Corrections
SURVEYING
Exercises:
a.) A measurement was recorded as 175.273m with a 30m tape that was only 29.995m
under standard conditions. What is the correct measurement?
b.) A rectangular lot having a dimension of 217.3m by 148.5m was measured by a 30m
tape which is 0.04m too long.
▪ Correct length of the measured line
▪ Find the error in area
▪ If the same tape is used to set a baseline with length of 837.5m, determine the actual
distance to be laid out
c.) A steel tape, known to be of standard length at 20°𝑪, is used in laying out a runway 2,500.00
m long. If it’s coefficient of linear expansion is 0.0000116/°𝑪, determine the temperature
correction and the correct length to be laid out when the temperature is 42°𝑪.
CORRECTIONS IN TAPING
d.) A 100m tape is suspended at the ends under a pull of 12kg. It is also supported at 20m and
75m marks. If the tape weighs 2.4 kg, what is the total correction due to sag.
e.) A 30m steel tape weighing 1.45kg is pf standard length under a pull of 5kg supported for full
length. The tape was used in measuring a line 938.55m long on a smooth level ground under a
steady pull of 10kg. Assuming E = 2x106 kg/cm² and the unit weight of steel to be 7.9x10−3
kg/cm³. ▪ Determine the cross-sectional area of the tape in cm²
▪ Determine the correction for increase in tension
▪ Determine the correct length of the line measured
f.) A 50m tape weighs 0.05kg/m and is supported at its end points and at the 10m and 25m
marks. If a pulls of 7kg is applied, determine the following:
▪ Correction due to sag between 0m and 8m marks, then 8m and 25m marks, and the 25m and 50m marks.
▪ Correction due to sag for one tape length, and
▪ Correct distance between the ends of the tape
