Is social media the Key factor to becoming successful in the music industry?
For my dissertation I have considered on writing about how impactful social media has on the
development and the success an artist may experience during their music career. As the evolution of
the internet has gotten better with time and the increase in accessibility people have to it, social
media has become a powerful tool in which a range of artists regardless of what genre they
specialise in, can use it to boost their music career. Anyone can use it; you don’t have to be signed to
a label to make an account. You can post free without limitations. Sites like Instagram, Twitter,
TikTok allows people to connect and directly message without needing a phone number or email. All
you need is a name and different artists, and musicians can find one another and collaborate.
social media can send out a message to the world in seconds; advertising and promoting an album, a
concert or festival. When back in the day the most people could do was make posters and get some
promotion on the radio. I would like to look further in depth into how social media change the way
we advertised music.
From personal experience I have realised how much social media had a big part to play in having an
open communicated between the artist and their audience. Social media has allowed the average
consumer to broaden my scope and be introduce to new things based on an algorithm the social
media provides, catering to the consumers likes and wants. In my dissertation, I want to take about
how this gives chances for new independent artist to break into the industry since their music can be
recommended to people around the world if they have similar tastes to an already established artist.
Though many artists have a management team behind their profiles monitoring what they post, we
get some who choose to have full control. Artists such has Lil Nas X and Doja Cat post funny skit and
TikToks which shows off their personality. I’ve realised that its not only about the music; social
media can be used to promote music and be used for the artist to promote themselves as a person.
Social media allows you to have a personal relation with you audience. An artist can post jokes and
memes which makes them more likable and relatable to the audience since the artist chose to
appeal to their humanity. This make the audience want to support the artist more because they feel
like they are supporting a friend.
Later on I want to discuss how social media can give artist more income streams other than their
music and concerts. Social media can help artists sell merch. The artist could also get sponsored to
promote equipment like headphones or software like plugins for a DAW.
I plan on researching examples of artist who have used social media to achieve incredible numbers
and further reinforce what influence social media has on a successful career.
