2° During: Write the definition and the most important characteristics of the following:
Conventional structures:
a. Abstract:
Definition
Basically, an abstract is a summary of a big text, be it a research paper or an article. It
does service to readers by giving them the brief overview of the key points—what the paper is
about, how it was conducted, what were the major findings, and what do they lead up to.
Characteristics
1. Concise: It is normally short, with about 150-250 words.
2. Clear: It describes clearly all the key ideas with no additional details.
3. Informative: This includes the basic facts of information—the topic of the study, its
methodology, and the results obtained from it.
4. Self-contained: Able to stand alone; that is, a person should be able to get the gist of the work
without reading the whole document.
b. Introduction
Definition
An introduction is the opening part of a text, speech, or presentation. This means it
presents the main issue or idea and sets a stage for what will follow.
Characteristics
1. Clear Purpose: It states clearly what one is going to talk about in the text or presentation.
2. Engaging: Grabs the attention of the reader or listener to become interested in continuing.
3. Brief Overview: It gives a brief overview of what will be discussed.
4. Context: This allows the audience to have any background information that might be relevant
for better understanding of the topic.
5. Thesis Statement: It contains a thesis statement, which is the main argument or point one is
going to discuss on the subject in the essays.
c. Materials and Methods
Definition
Materials and Methods is a part of the research paper or report where one describes
what has been used and how one has carried out the research. This section is very important
because it allows others to understand precisely how the study is conducted, hence it will help
in replicating the study or even verifying the results.
Characteristics
1. Materials: Enumerates all the tools, equipment, and resources used in the research—like
chemicals, software, or survey instruments.
2. Methods: This subsection describes explicitly how the research has been conducted,
including steps of experimentation and data collection, and methods of analysis.
3. Clarity and Detail: In this section, what is written should be clear and detailed enough so that
another researcher can redo it and come up with similar results.
4. Organization: Normally logically, and often chronologically, in order to trace the process of
research in that order.
d. Results
Definition
Results are outcomes or effects which develop from actions or efforts. They indicate
what has been attained after doing something.
Characteristics
1. Measurable: The results can often be measured or observed. For example, a goal reached
or a task completed.
2. Specific: Good results are clear and specific, not general.
3. Timely: Results usually have a time frame by which they should happen.
4. Reflect Effort: They explicitly reflect the effect of work or effort that is input.
5. Relevant: They have to be important and relevant to the goals or objectives being aimed at.
e. Discussion
Definition
A discussion is a form of conversation in which people exchange ideas, opinions, or
information about a specific topic.
Characteristics
1. Interactive: A discussion includes several persons talking and listening to each other.
2. Purposeful: The discussion is intended to explore a subject, solve a problem, or reach a
decision.
3. Open-Minded: The participants have to be open to different perspectives and viewpoints.
4. Respectful: Everyone listens and replies politely, even in case of a disagreement.
5. Focused: A response staying on topic to achieve the goal of the discussion.
f. Conclusions
A conclusion forms the last part of every write-up or any speech where the summation
of the main points is done, and the wrapping up of the overall message takes place. It gives a
feeling of closure, and most of the time, it restates the main idea or argument.
Characteristics
1. Summary: Briefly reiterates what points or arguments are made in the text.
2. Closure: This brings the discussion to a natural close, thus allowing the reader or the listener
to walk away with a clear understanding of the subject.
3. Reinforcement: Emphasize the main idea or argument.
4. Final Thoughts: Sometimes this offers a final thought, suggestion, or even a call to action,
giving the audience something to consider after finishing.
5. Clarity: The nature of this section should be clear and concise, introducing new ideas is not
necessary.
