Exercise 3

The document presents a series of problems related to magnetic cores, each requiring calculations involving flux, flux density, reluctance, and coil characteristics. It includes specific parameters such as relative permeability, coil turns, and air gap dimensions for various configurations. Each problem aims to determine key magnetic properties based on given inputs and assumptions.

Problem 01:

Consider the magnetic core shown in Figure 1. Assume that the depth of the core is 10 cm and that
the relative permeability of the solid core is 2000. Determine the following:

Figure 1. Magnetic core for Problem 1

(a) The value of the current that will produce a flux of 0.01 Wb in the core.
(b) The flux density at the bottom of the core if the current amount found in Part (a) is used.
(c) The flux density at the right side of the core, if the current amount found in Part (a) is used
Problem 02:
Consider the magnetic core shown in Figure 2 and notice that three sides of the core are of uniform
width, whereas the fourth side is somewhat thinner. The depth of the core into the page is 10 cm.
The coil has 300 turns, and the relative permeability of the core is 2000, g1 = 0.1 cm and g2 = 0.5
cm. Include the effect of fringing in the airgaps.
Find the flux that will be produced in the core by a 5 A input current

Problem 03:
Consider the magnetic core shown in Figure 3. Assume that the depth of the solid core is 5 cm and
that the relative permeability of the core is 1000. Also assume that the air gaps on the left and right
legs are 0.03 and 0.06 cm, respectively. Take the fringing effects at each gap into account by
calculating the effective area of each air gap as 5% greater than its actual physical size. If the coil
has 100 turns and 2 A current in it, determine the following:

Determine:
(a) The total reluctance of the core.
(b) The total flux in the core.
(c) The flux in the center leg of the core and each of outer legs
(d) The flux density in the left and right air gap.
Problem 04:
Consider the magnetic core shown in Figure 4. Notice the way each coil is wound on each leg. Use
a relative permeability of 2000 for the solid core and assume that it remains constant. Use a core
depth of 5 cm.
a) Put dot making on the two coils.
b) Find the flux linkages 1 and 2 in term of i1 and i2.
c) Determine the values of L1, L2, and M.

Problem 05:
Consider the magnetic core shown in Figure 5. Notice the way each coil is wound on each leg. The
reluctances are R1 = 2.106 At/Wb, R2 = 2.106 At/Wb, R3 = 3.106 At/Wb. N1 = 100 turns, N2 = 50
turns.
a) Put dot making on the two coils.
b) Find the flux linkages 1 and 2 in term of i1 and i2.
c) Determine the values of L1, L2, and M.
