Performance Task G 11
Performance Task G 11
Topic: Probability Mass Function, Mean, and Variance of a Discrete Random Variable
Task Overview: In this performance task, you will work with a discrete random variable, calculate its
probability mass function (PMF), and then compute its mean and variance. You will need to apply the
concepts of probability distributions, mean, and variance in a real-world scenario.
Task Guidelines:
Part 1: Define the Scenario: Find a scenario in our school that you can apply the Probability Mass
Function, Mean and Variance of a Discrete Random Variable.
Example:
Imagine a game where a player rolls a fair 6-sided die. The outcome of the roll is considered a discrete
random variable X, which represents the number rolled on the die. The possible outcomes for X are: {1,
2,3,4,5, and 6}.
Step 1: Create a probability mass function (PMF) for the random variable X. Since the die is fair, each
outcome has an equal probability. Define the PMF mathematically.
The mean or expected value E (X) of a discrete random variable X is calculated using the formula:
Where:
For the 6-sided die, calculate the expected value of X, i.e., the mean of the die roll.
The variance of a discrete random variable X is a measure of how spread out the values of X are around
the mean. The formula for variance is:
* E(X) is the mean (expected value) of X, which you calculated in the previous part.
Using the PMF you created, compute the variance for the random variable X.
Part 4: Interpretation
* Interpret the PMF: What does the probability mass function tell you about the distribution of
outcomes?
* Interpret the Mean: What does the mean (expected value) represent in the context of this game?
* Interpret the Variance: What does the variance tell you about the spread of outcomes in the game?
Requirements:
Probability Mass Function (PMF): Provide a table or a mathematical expression for the PMF of the
random variable X.
Mean Calculation: Show the step-by-step calculation of the expected value E(X).
Interpretation: Write a brief interpretation of the PMF, mean, and variance in the context of the dice-
rolling game.
