CHAPTER 3 EMS (Engine Management System)

SECTION 1 Summary

Illustration 1-1
The engine DA4G18 is controlled by a core unit MT20U. It’s characterized by closed-loop control, MPI
(Multi-Point Injection), DI (Direct Ignition without distributor) and 3-way catalyst. The main function of
the EMS includes,
 Electrical source controlled by a relay  Engine knock control
 Air flux measured by air flowing speed and  Idle step motor control
density  Plug-and-play air conditioner control
 MAPCID air inlet pressure  Water cooling fan control
 Closed-loop control and MPI  Charcoal canister control valve
 Fuel supply without oil returning  Self-diagnostic
 Fuel pump control  Over-voltage protection
 Integrated ignition unit in ECM and Direct  Mileage record

6.1 Engine malfunction code

Engine malfunction alarm indicator is as shown in illustration 1-12.
Engine malfunction codes show the conditions of the
Vehicle power system. And help technicians repair the vehicle.

Illustration 1-13 Illustration 1-14

6.2 Check and diagnosis (normal mode)
6.2.1 Turn ignition switch to “ON”, and then check the engine malfunction alarm indicator. If it doesn’t
light, check and repair the combination instrument or related harness.
6.2.2 The engine malfunction alarm indicator should be off when engine runs. If it is on, malfunction
happens and diagnostic test is necessary.

6.3 Read the malfunction code

6.3.1 Read the malfunction code with a diagnostic tester: Connect the diagnostic tester and the in-car
diagnostic connector, turn ignition key in position “ON”, read the codes as shown on the screen
of the diagnostic tester.
6.3.2 Read the malfunction code by engine malfunction indicator
Connect DLC3-1 and DLC3-4 (or DLC3-5), malfunction codes can be read by the flash of the
engine malfunction indicator. Turn ignition key in position “ON”, then engine malfunction indicator
on combination instrument will start to flash in 3.2 seconds. 3.2 seconds exist between two
codes. For example, malfunction P0105 comes out as illustration 1-15.

6.4 Clear malfunction codes
6.4.1 Clear malfunction codes with a diagnostic tester. Connect the diagnostic tester and the in-car
diagnostic connector, turn ignition key in position “ON”, clear malfunction codes as shown on the
screen of the diagnostic tester.
6.4.2 Clear malfunction codes without a diagnostic tester. Take off the cathode wire from the battery and
keep for 15 minutes, or take off the ECU fuse from the fuse box and keep for 15 minutes.
