Dear Mum and Dad,

I'm writing this email because I've got some important news to tell you. I'm getting married!
Isn't that great?
It all happened last night. We were having dinner in a very nice Italian restaurant when Jake
suddenly became all quiet and said he had something to tell me. He looked so serious that I was
afraid he was going to break up with me or tell me he had a terrible illness, but then he took a
little black box out of his pocket and put it in front of me. I opened it and inside was an
engagement ring and he just said, 'Will you marry me?' I was so excited that I didn't even stop to
think about it and replied, 'Yes, of course I will, silly!' And I put the ring on my finger. So there
we were, engaged!
Then we spent the rest of the evening making plans. Can we have the wedding at your house?
You've got such a big, beautiful garden that it'll be perfect. We are going to wait until after my
final exams in June and I thought a good day would be 10 th July. That gives us eight months to
plan everything. It should be enough time, especially as we don't want a big traditional white
wedding  just a big party with our best friends and family. We're not going to start a family
straight away because I need to get my career going, and I might even decide to stay on at
university and do a master's, but before we do that, we're going to travel round the world for a
year. Jake can take a career break for that time; his office have already said it's OK. It's so
exciting!
Anyway, I have to get to class now. I'll phone you tomorrow.
Your loving daughter,
Lucy

Helen: Look at you, Anne, how brown you are! Did you have a good time on
holiday?
Anne: Yes, it was great.
Helen: You went to Greece, didn't you?
Anne: Yes. We spent ten days touring around some of the islands and then
we spent three days in Athens.
Helen: Athens! What was that like?
Anne: Actually it was very good. We stayed in a very luxurious hotel in a
quiet street near the centre. It had the most spectacular view of the
Acropolis. I could lie in my bed at night and see it all lit up. It was
lovely.
Helen: What was the food like?
Anne: It was delicious. We were staying in Plaka – that’s the famous part that
most tourists visit – and there were so many restaurants to choose from
that we tried somewhere new for every meal. We didn't have even one
bad experience. My favourite was a seafood place and I had the most
amazing fish.
Helen: I've heard that it's not as safe there as it used to be. Is that true?
Anne: Nothing bad happened to us so I can't really say. Everybody was very
friendly and it felt very safe. Maybe because we saw quite a lot of
police around the place.
Helen: Apart from eating, what else did you do?
Anne: We went up to the Acropolis, of course, although it was a bit hot and
then we went to the Acropolis Museum. It's only been open for a few
years and it was fascinating. We also went shopping. I bought quite a
lot of things: some shoes and a lovely leather bag, some pretty painted
coffee cups for my mum and dad, a big box of tasty honey sweets for
my grandfather and earrings for my sisters.
Helen: You sound like that was the best bit!
Anne: I enjoyed the whole holiday but my favourite part was lying on the
beach, sunbathing and swimming. The sea is very warm and the most
amazing blue colour. When you see the postcards, you think that the
sea can't really be that colour, but it is. You should go next year, you'd
love it. I'll send you the name of the hotel  it was excellent.
Helen: Maybe I will!
20. What could Anne see from her hotel window?

Hi Mum and Dad,

Well I can't believe that another school year has finished. I wish I could come home and see you
for the summer, but I've got a job looking after two little children. I had applied for a waitressing
job, which was better paid than what I'm doing now, but they wanted someone with experience,
which I don't have, so I didn't get it. I started last week and it seems to be all right. The children
are nice and their mother Karen is OK, too, although I don't see very much of her because she
works. For my first day with the children, Karen thought it would be nice if we did something
fun together, so she asked me to take them to the zoo. I hadn't been to a zoo since I was a little
girl, but I remember that you used to take me quite often and I loved it. I don't remember though,
why we stopped going.

Anyway, my first shock was how expensive it was. It cost twenty pounds for adults and fifteen
pounds fifty for each child but there was a two pound discount for students like me. Of course
Karen had given me the money  she paid for my ticket as well. The zoo was much bigger than I
remembered and there was so much to see that we spent the whole day there.

We saw every kind of animal you can imagine. Ryan, the little boy, loved the reptile house with
all those disgusting snakes and Julie liked the tigers, but my favourite was the elephant house. I
don't know what it is about elephants, especially the babies, but I love them. Maybe I should
have been an explorer or a tropical vet or something. It was absolutely brilliant! Maybe we
should all go together again like we used to.

Anyway, I have to go.

Bye for now

Nature's strangest hybrids
Nature has produced many types of animals – some of them beautiful, some of them ugly. But
some of the strangest are the animals which are a mixture – or hybrid – of animals. Here are four
of nature's hybrids.
Alligator Snapping Turtle
This reptile looks as if it's from the dinosaur age. It has the mouth of an alligator and the body of
a turtle and it is even called 'the dinosaur of the turtle world.' You’ll only find this strange-
looking creature in the rivers, canals and lakes of the south-eastern United States where they can
live to be 100 years old.
Northern Leopard Frog
The northern leopard frog used to be common in a few countries including Canada. In particular,
people in restaurants enjoyed eating the legs. However, this frog with the dark spots of a leopard
is disappearing quickly. Scientists think it is probably because of pollution and deforestation.
Butterfly fish
You can see the butterfly fish in the warm waters of the world. There are about 114 different
species and they come in many colours: blue, red, orange, or yellow. Some travel in large
schools and others live alone until they find a male or female partner, who they stay with for the
rest of their life.
Platypus (mammal)
When you talk about nature's hybrids, the platypus from Australia is the winner! It has the nose
and feet of a duck and its body is more like a beaver's. On land they are quite slow, but in water
they are excellent swimmers and can stay underwater for long periods.

1. The writer thinks all animals are ugly.

2. The alligator snapping turtle comes from the dinosaur age.
3. You can see the turtle in the United States.
4. People often see the northern leopard frog.
5. The northern leopard frog is probably disappearing because of human activity.
6. There are many different varieties of butterfly fish.
7. Butterfly fish always travel in groups with other fish.
8. The writer thinks the platypus is the strangest hybrid animal.
