Aim
To perform a load test on a DC Shunt Motor.

Instruments
S. No. Name Type/Range Quantity
1 Voltmeter MC, 0–300V 1
2 Ammeter MC, 0–15A 2
3 Rheostat Single Tube, 272𝛺, 1.7A 1

Theory
The speed of a DC motor is given by:
𝑉 − 𝐼 𝑎 𝑅𝑎
𝑁∝
𝜙
where:

• 𝑉: Applied voltage

• 𝐼𝑎 : Armature current

• 𝑅𝑎 : Armature resistance

• 𝜙: Flux per pole

For a DC Shunt Motor, under constant voltage, 𝜙 remains almost constant. The speed decreases with an increase
in load because of the increased armature current, which reduces the numerator in the above equation. The motor
is loaded using an electrical loading arrangement with a coupled DC Shunt Generator. The efficiency of the motor is
calculated using:
Output Power
Efficiency = × 100%
Input Power
The following characteristics are plotted:

• Armature Current vs. Speed

• Output vs. Efficiency

Circuit Diagram

Procedure
a) Connect the circuit as per the diagram.

b) Ensure no load is applied to the DC Shunt Generator.

c) Adjust the motor’s field rheostat to its minimum resistance.

d) Switch on the DC supply and start the motor using the starter.

e) Measure the speed at no load.

f) Gradually increase the load by switching on the resistive load in steps. For each step, record the motor voltage,
current, speed, load voltage, and load current.

g) Continue loading the motor until the rated current is reached.

h) Gradually remove the load and switch off the DC supply to the motor.
