Worksheet - 4 (MEng 2210)

The document contains a worksheet for Strength of Materials I (MEng 2210) with problems involving composite beams, shear force and bending moment diagrams, and stress calculations. It includes specific examples such as a steel and aluminum composite beam under a moment, a double overhanging beam with distributed loads, and a cantilever beam with a concentrated load. Answers to some problems are provided, including maximum stresses for different scenarios.

Strength of Materials I (MEng 2210)

Worksheet - 4

1. A steel bar and an aluminum bar are bonded together to form the composite beam
shown. The modulus of elasticity for aluminum is 70 GPa and for steel is 200 GPa.
Knowing that the beam is bent about a horizontal axis by a couple of moment M =
1500 Nm, determine the maximum stress in (a) the aluminum,(b) the steel.

Answer: a= -56.9 MPa ; s= 111.9 MPa

2. For the double overhanging beam of length ‘L’ and overhangs ‘a’ with a uniformly
distributed load ‘w’ acting across the entire beam as shown in the figure,
a) Determine the reaction forces at the supports.
b) Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams.

Answer: ?

3. For the beam loading shown in the figure,

a) draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams,
b) determine the maximum normal and shear stresses and sketch
the stress distribution.

Answer: max = 116.2 MPa

4. A cantilever 4 m long is of T-section with the web vertical. The section is 150 mm wide
by 150 mm deep. The web and flange are 12 mm thick. The cantilever carries a
concentrated load of 1.25 kN at a distance of 3 m from the fixed end.
a) Sketch the bending stress distribution and determine σmax .
b) Sketch the shearing stress distribution and determine τmax .
