UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hue
The Complex of Hue Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located in the city of Hue

Nguyen Dynasty in 1802. It held this position for thirteen Nguyen kings until 1945.
The massive complex features hundreds of monuments and ruins, such as the Forbidden Purple City,

Hue, located on the banks of the Huong River, (also known as the Perfume River) is about a hundred

SON DOONG CAVE
Located in the limestone mountains of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Son Doong Caves was
first found in 1991 by Ho Khanh, a local man. In 2009, the cave was explored and published by a
group of scientists from British Cave Research Association. Son Doong Cave was formed from 2 to 5
million years ago, when the river flowed through the limestone mountain area and was buried. The
water eroded limestone and created an underground tunnel. In soft limestone areas, the collapse of
tunnel ceiling formed large holes which became giant domes afterward. The cave is about 200m high,
200m wide and at least 8.5 km long. Especially, Son Doong consists of two entrances, which is unique
among explored caves in Phong Nha ~ Ke Bang National Park. Exploring the cave, visitors were
surprised with spectacular scenery of numerous stalactites of which some giant stalagmites are more
than 70 metres high. Deep inside the cave exists a grandiose tropical jungle called “Garden of Eden”
by the explorers. The jungle is home to diversified system of fauna and flora. Besides, the cave
possesses a 2.5-kilometre underground river. Not far from the “Garden of Eden” lies an enormous
“pearl collection” consisting of tens of thousands of small stone pieces in dry ponds, contributing to
magnificent beauty of the cave.

EXERCISE 4 Read the passage, and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question.
A rather surprising geographical feature of America is that a huge freshwater lake, one of the
world's largest and deepest, lies hidden there under four kilometers of rice. Now known as Lake
Vostok, this huge body of water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica. The lake is
able to exist in its unfrozen state beneath this block of ice because its waters are warmed by geothermal
heat from the earth's core. The thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually insulates it from the frigid
temperatures(the lowest ever recorded on Earth)on the surface.
The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting an aerial
survey of the area. Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and revealed a body of
indeterminate size. It was not until much more recently that data collected by satellite made scientists
aware of the tremendous size of the lake; the satellite-borne radar detected an extremely flat region
where the ice remains level because it is floating on the water of the lake.
The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctica is of interest to the
scientific community because of the potential that the lake contains ancient microbes that have
survived for thousands upon thousands of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and
elevated ultraviolet light that have affected organisms in more exposed areas. The downside of the
discovery, however, lies in the difficulty of conducting research on the lake in such a harsh climate and
in the problems associatited with obtaining uncontaminated samples from the lake without actually
exposing the lake to contamination. Scientists are looking for possible ways to accomplish this.

EXERCISE 7
Task 1. Read a text about Ha Long Bay, a World Heritage Site in Vietnam, and choose the best
title.
Đọc văn bản về Vịnh Hạ Long, Di sản Thế giới tại Việt Nam, và chọn tiêu đề tốt nhất.
A. Why Ha Long Bay was recognized as a World Heritage Site
B. Attractions in Ha Long Bay
C. Threats to Ha Long Bay and possible solutions
Recognized as a World Heritage Site in Viet Nam, Ha Long Bay attracts thousands of visitors every
year, who come to enjoy its magnificent natural landscape. However, the bay is also facing a number of
threats that may lead to serious damage to the site.
Wildlife in Ha Long Bay is being destroyed by overfishing as this is the only job to support most of the
inhabitants here. As a result, rare sea creatures may become extinct soon.
Another problem is deforestation of mangrove forests. The mangroves, known as the plants native to Ha
Long Bay, provide protection during storms, preserve the shoreline, and act as a natural filter that keeps
the sea environment clean and healthy. Numerous wildlife species including plants and fish also depend
on the mangroves.
What is more, some markets in Ha Long Bay sell unusual relics and natural objects, such as coral
pieces, seashells, or unique stones, probably illegally removed from the protected areas. Many of these
items, converted into rings, key chains, and other souvenirs, are purchased by unsuspecting tourists.
Buying these items creates a black market leading to further destruction of Ha Long Bay.
As eco-tourists, we can help to protect Ha Long Bay for future generations in several ways. For
example, by sailing or fishing with the fishermen, we can share the benefits of tourism with the local
community. This will help them to increase their income and reduce excessive fishing. We can also help
local people to learn about the significance of the mangrove forests and help them to replant the
mangroves. We should also avoid purchasing unusual souvenirs. As responsible tourists, we can
discourage suspected traders or vendors by refusing to buy their illegal goods.

EXERCISE 8. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
One of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Great Pyramid of Giza was a monument of wisdom
and prophecy built as a tomb for Pharaoh Cheops in 2720 B.C. Despite its antiquity, certain aspects of
its construction make it one of the truly great wonders of the world. The thirteen-acre structure near the
Nile River is a solid mass of stone blocks covered with limestone. Inside are a number of hidden
passageways and the burial chamber for the Pharaoh. It is the largest single structure in the world. The
four sides of the pyramid are aligned almost exactly on true north, south, east, and west – an incredible
engineering feat. The ancient Egyptians were sun worshipers and great astronomers, so computations
for the Great Pyramid were based on astronomical observations.
Explorations and detailed examinations of the base of the structure reveal many intersecting lines.
Further scientific study indicates that these represent a type of timeline of events – past, present, and
future. Many of the events have been interpreted and found to coincide with known facts of the past.
Others are prophesied for future generations and are currently under investigation. Many believe that
pyramids have supernatural powers, and this one is no exception. Some researchers even associate it
with extraterrestrial beings of the ancient past. Was this superstructure made by ordinary beings, or one
built by a race far superior to any known today?
1. The word “intersecting” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ____.
A. crossing B. aligning C. observing D. cutting
2. What do the intersecting lines in the base symbolise?
A. Architects' plans for the hidden passages.
B. Pathways of the great solar bodies.
C. Astrological computations.
D. Dates of important events taking place throughout time.
3. The word "prophesied” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ____.
A. affiliated B. precipitated C. terminated D. foretold
4. Extraterrestrial beings are ____.
A. very strong workers B. astronomers in the ancient times
C. researchers in Egyptology D. living beings from other planets
5. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Symbolism of the Great Pyramid
B. Problems with the Construction of the Great Pyramid
C. Wonders of the Great Pyramid of Giza
D. Exploration of the Burial Chamber of Cheops
EXERCISE 9. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
MY 25,000 WONDERS OF THE WORLD
The coaches at the Uluru Sunset Viewing Area were parked three deep. Guides were putting up tables
and setting out wines and snacks. Ten minutes to go. Are we ready? Five minutes, folks. Got your
cameras? OK, here it comes ...
Whether an American backpacker or a wealthy traveller, Danish, British, French, we all saw that sunset
over Uluru, or Ayer Rock, in what seems to be the prescribed tourist manner: mouth full of corn
chips, glass full of Château Somewhere, and a loved one posing in a photo's foreground, as the all-time
No 1 Australian icon behind us glowed briefly red.
Back on the coach, our guide declared our sunset to be 'pretty good', although not the best she'd
witnessed in her six years. Behind me, Adam, a student from Manchester, reinserted his iPod earphones:
'Well, that's enough of that rock.' Indeed. Shattered from getting up at five in order to see Uluru at dawn,
I felt empty and bored. What was the point? What made this rock the definitive sunset rock event? Why
had we come here? Well, I suppose my sons would remember it always. Except they'd missed the
magical moment while they checked out a rival tour group's snack table, which had better crisps.
So now I've visited four of the “25 Wonders of the World", as decreed by Rough Guides. And I think
this will be the last. While in my heart I can see myself wondering enchanted through China's Forbidden
City, in my head I know I would be standing grumpily at the back of a group listening to some Imperial
Palace Tour Guide. At the Grand Canyon I would be getting angr with tourists watching it through
cameras – eyes are not good enough, since they lack a recording facility.
As we become richer and consumer goods are more widely affordable, and satisfy us only briefly before
becoming obsolete, we turn to travel to provide us with 'experiences’. These will endure, set us apart
from stay-at-home people and maybe, fill our lives with happiness and meaning, Books with helpful
titles like 1,000 Places to See Before You Die are bestsellers. I'd bet many backpacks on the Machu
Picchu Inca Trail are filled with copies, with little tieks penciled in the margins after each must-see sight
has been visited. Travel is now the biggest industry on the planet, bigger than armaments or
pharmaceuticals. And yet viewing the main sight of any destination is rarely the highlight of a trip.
Mostly it sits there on your itinerary like a duty visit to a dull relative. The guilt of not visiting the
Sistine Chapel, because we preferred to stay in a bar drinking limoncello, almost spoilt a weekend in
Rome.
In Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef reproached us. How could we travel 15,000 miles without
seeing it? How would we explain back home that we were too lazy, and preferred to stay playing a ball
game in our hotel pool? In the end, we went to the reef and it was fine. But it won't rank highly in the
things I'll never forget about Australia. Like the fact that the banknotes are made of waterproof plastic:
how gloriously Australian is that? Even after a day's surfing, the $50 note you left in your surfing shorts
is still OK to buy you beer! And the news item that during a recent tsunami warning, the surfers at
Bondi Beach refused to leave the sea: what, and miss the ride of their lives? Or the stern warning at the
hand luggage X-ray machine at Alice Springs airport: "No jokes must be made whilst being processed
by this facility' - to forestall, no doubt, disrespectful Aussie comments: 'You won't find the bomb, mate.
It's in my suitcase.’
The more I travel, the clearer it seems that the truth of a place is in the tiny details of everyday life, not
in its most glorious statues or scenery. Put down your camera, throw away your list, the real wonders of
the world number indefinitely more than 25.
1. What does the author mean by ‘the prescribed tourist manner’ in paragraph 2?
A. They are all backpackers.
B. They are all wealthy travellers.

EXERCISE 10. You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1-13, which are based on the
Reading Passage below.
Pulling strings to build pyramids
No one knows exactly how the pyramids were built. Marcus Chown reckons the answer could be
'hanging in the air'.
The pyramids of Egypt were built more than three thousand years ago, and no one knows how. The
conventional picture is that tens of thousands of slaves dragged stones on sledges. But there is no
evidence to back this up. Now a Californian software consultant called Maureen Clemmons has
suggested that kites might have been involved. While perusing a book on the monuments of Egypt, she
noticed a hieroglyph that showed a row of men standing in odd postures. They were holding what
looked like ropes that led, via some kind of mechanical system, to a giant bird in the sky. She
wondered if perhaps the bird was actually a giant kite, and the men were using it to lift a heavy object.
Intrigued, Clemmons contacted Morteza Gharib, aeronautics professor at the California Institute of
Technology. He was fascinated by the idea. 'Coming from Iran, I have a keen interest in Middle
Eastern science', he says. He too was puzzled by the picture that had sparked Clemmons's interest. The
object in the sky apparently had wings far too short and wide for a bird. 'The possibility certainly
existed that it was a kite', he says. And since he needed a summer project for his student Emilio Graff,
investigating the possibility of using kites as heavy lifters seemed like a good idea.
Gharib and Graff set themselves the task of raising a 4.5-metre stone column from horizontal to
vertical, using no source of energy except the wind. Their initial calculations and scale-model wind-
tunnel experiments convinced them they wouldn't need a strong wind to lift the 33.5-tonne column.
Even a modest force, if sustained over a long time, would do. The key was to use a pulley system that
would magnify the applied force. So they rigged up a tent-shaped scaffold directly above the tip of the
horizontal column, with pulleys suspended from the scaffold directly above the tip of the horizontal
column, with pulleys suspended from the scaffold's apex. The idea was that as one end of the column
rose, the base would roll across the ground on a trolley.
Earlier this year, the team put Clemmons's unlikely theory to the test, using a 40-square-meter
rectangular nylon sail. The kite lifted the column clean off the ground. 'We were absolutely stunned'
Gharib says. The instant the sail opened into the wind, a huge force was generated and the column was
raised to the vertical in a mere 40 seconds.'
The wind was blowing at a gentle 16 to 20 kilometers an hour, little more than half what they thought
would be needed. What they had failed to reckon with was what happened when the kite was opened.
There was a huge initial force - five times larger than the steady state force', Gharib says. This jerk
meant that kites could lift huge weights, Gharib realised. Even a 300-tonne column could have been
lifted to the vertical with 40 or so men and four or five sails. So Clemmons was right: the pyramid
builders could have used kites to lift massive stones into place. 'Whether they actually did is another
matter,' Gharib says. There are no pictures showing the construction of the pyramids, so there is no
way to tell what really happened. The evidence for using kites to move large stones is no better or
worse than the evidence for the brute force method', Gharib says.
Indeed, the experiments triage left many specialists unconvinced. The evidence for kite- lifting is non-
existent', says Wallace Wendrich, an associate professor of Egyptology at the University of California,
Los Angeles.
Others feel there is more of a case for the theory. Harnessing the wind would not have been a problem
for accomplished sailors like the Egyptians. And they are known to have used wooden pulleys, which
could have been made strong enough to bear the weight of massive blocks of stone. In addition, there
is some physical evidence that the ancient Egyptians were interested in flight. A wooden artifact found
on the step pyramid at Saqqara looks uncannily like a modern glider. Although it dates from several
hundred years after the building of the pyramids, its sophistication suggests that the Egyptians might
have been developing ideas of flight for a long time. And other ancient civilisations certainly knew
about kites; as early as 1250 BC, the Chinese were using them to deliver messages and dump flaming
debris on their foes.
The experiments might even have practical uses nowadays. There are plenty of places around the
globe where people have no access to heavy machinery, but do know how to deal with, wind, sailing
and basic mechanical principles. Gharib has already been contacted by a civil engineer in Nicaragua,
who wants to put up buildings with adobe roofs supported by concrete arches on a site that heavy
equipment can't reach. His idea is to build the arches horizontally, then lift them into place using kites.
'We've given him some design hints', says Gharib. 'We're just waiting for him to report back.' So
whether they were actually used to build the pyramids or not, it seems that kites may make sensible
construction tools in the 21st century AD.

EXERCISE 11. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions
What Is Heritage Protection?
Heritage is traditional beliefs, customs, and culture. We use the word “heritage” in many
different ways. People talk about their family’s heritage, their city’s heritage, and their
country’s heritage.
Here are some examples of heritage. During Chinese New Year, people in China give red
envelopes. That is part of Chinese heritage. Every year in the American city New Orleans, there is a
huge party called Mardi Gras. That is a part of New Orleans’ heritage. Heritage can also be more
private and personal. If your family has a big dinner every Sunday night, that’s part of your family’s
heritage.
Today, heritage is changing. The Internet connects people around the world. In many ways, this
is a good thing, because we can learn about the heritage of other countries, and we can show our own
heritage to the world. However, some people worry that traditional heritage is disappearing. Think
about it. In many ways, countries are becoming more and more alike. In
just about every country around the world, you can find McDonald’s, Nike shoes, Starbucks
coffee, and American films. Some people think this is a good change, but others don’t like it.
You can decide whether or not you think it is a good thing. However, almost everyone wants to protect
their traditional heritage, and sometimes this is hard. For example, when a new McDonald’s opens in
your town, a traditional restaurant might have to close.
This is why heritage protection is so important. Heritage protection is a simple idea. It
means keeping your country’s or your city’s heritage alive. People do this in many ways. The
biggest part of heritage protection is probably preserving old buildings. A few other examples
of heritage protection are making sure your children speak your traditional language, and
teaching your heritage to children.
The world is changing very fast. This change brings a lot of good things. But as the world is
changing, it is important to remember the heritage of our parents and our grandparents.
1. What is the main point of heritage protection?
A. Showing your heritage to other people B. Using the Internet

4. What is the main point of the last paragraph?
A. It is OK to forget traditional heritage.
B. The world is changing, but it is happening very slowly,
C. As the world changes, we have to remember our heritage.
D. People should talk to their parents and grandparents a lot.
5. Which of the following is NOT an example of heritage protection?
A. Making sure your children speak your traditional language
B. Protecting old buildings
C. Teaching your children about your heritage
D. Drinking Starbucks and wearing Nikes

EXERCISE 12. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
Tourism and Heritage Protection
Travelling is a great thing to do. It helps us learn about different people and different
places. Some people travel because they want to see nature. Others travel because they want to make
friends and try great food. Of course, a lot of tourists are interested in traditional culture.
Tourism can be very good for traditional cultures. This is because when people travel to
another country, they often want to learn more about that country’s traditions, such as music,
food, and history. Therefore, the local people in that country will keep their traditional culture
alive. They will wear traditional clothing, and sell traditional food. They will also have shows
for tourists. These shows can be dances, concerts, plays, or something else.
Tourism also helps people respect each other. If you understand another culture well, you
will probably respect that culture much more. You will probably want to protect that culture as
well.
However, tourism is not always good for traditional culture. Many people say that tourism
creates “fake traditional culture”. This means that the local people wear traditional costumes,
and do traditional dances only for tourists, but that is not their real lifestyle. Their real lifestyles
are similar to the tourists’ lifestyle. They are just pretending because they want to make money.
Another problem is that tourists can interfere with the local people’s lives. For example,
sometimes tourists come to watch local people praying in temples. While the local people pray,
tourists take photographs and make noise. This often bothers the local people. Sometimes
tourists also damage local sites. If 500 people enter an ancient temple every day, they may
damage that temple.
No matter what, more and more tourists want to learn about traditional cultures. Most local
people want more tourism, because tourists bring money and help local businesses. Tourists
have to respect local culture and places. Local governments have to make laws that protect
places and lifestyles. If everyone is responsible, then tourism will be great for traditional
cultures.
1. What is the main point of the passage?
A. Tourism is always good for traditional culture.
B. Tourism is always bad for traditional culture.
C. Tourism can be good and bad for traditional culture.
D. Tourists don’t care about traditional culture.
2. Why do local people want tourism?
A. Tourists bring money.
B. Tourists help teach local people.
C. Tourists tell local people about business.
D. Tourists destroy traditional culture.
3. What is one problem that tourists create?
A. They hurt local people. B. They steal money from local people.
C. They hurt local businesses. D. They interfere with local lifestyles.
4. The word “they” in paragraph 2 refers to________.
A. tourists B. local people C. tourist guides D. dancers
5. What does the second sentence of the third paragraph mean?
A. If you don’t respect other people, then they won’t respect you.
B. If you understand another culture, then you will respect it more.
C. If you respect yourself, then other people will respect you, too.
D. Nobody respects traditional culture anymore.
6. The word “fake” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to________.
A. real B. not real C. very good D. very bad
7. All of the following can be inferred from the passage EXCEPT that________.
A. tourism can create jobs for local people
B. tourism can be used as a means to promote cultural exchanges
C. in some places local people perform some dances that do not belong to their everyday
activities
D. too many tourists at a historical site can make it collapse at once.
