Intro
Our decade project will be about the 1980’s. And will be talking about the
major events, economy, music, fashion, lifestyles, technology and social impacts.
then at the end we will compare the 1980’s to now.
Major events (internationally)
There were many international events that happened throughout the 1980s.
The collapse of the soviet union was one of them which helped bring the cold war
to an end. The war was a long conflict between the United States and the Soviet
Union. Another important event was the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. This wall
had divided East and West Berlin for years, and its fall gave people in Eastern
Europe more freedom. During this time, Aids also became a deadly epidemic,
affecting millions of people. Groups like ACT UP worked hard to get better
treatment and raise awareness about the disease. These events were important in
shaping the world during the 1980s
Major events (in canada)
But there were major events happening here in Canada like the terry fox
marathon of hope. Which was spreading awareness about cancer and raising
money for research. “Oh Canada” became our national anthem, which shows our
independence. We had our first female governor, along with the first black
lieutenant governor. We finally apologized to the Japanese canadians. And the
economy wasn’t the best, the value being the lowest ever.
Overall we had more independence, racism and discrimination was getting
better but it was still a problem.
Economy
As we mentioned earlier, the economy was not good. The stock market
crashed which had a huge impact on the global stock market including canada. And
as a result $47billion dollars was wiped out of toronto's stock exchange. The public
was scared, due to the belief that the investors were taking their money. They
reacted by taking their money back that they invested.

Music 1
The style of music back then was mostly rock, hip hop and dance pop. and
music was changed. The rise of MTV boosted the spread of music videos and a
variety of artists were getting recognized by people.
Music 2
This led to producing many iconic artists such as Michael Jackson, Oasis,
Duran Duran, Madonna, and more. Artists had a huge influence on the audience, so
they often used their songs and platforms to spread awareness of political issues to
the public.
fashion
The fashion style in the 80’s was iconic, with the shoulder pads bright neon colors
and sportswear. They would teased their hair to make it look as big as possible and
many of their styles were influenced by singers and bands. So people that listen to
punk music will dress punk, leather jackets, ripped jeans and studs. And for people
that listen to hip hop would wear track suits, gold chains and sneakers.
Life styles
The lifestyle was getting more alike to how it is today. Women continued to go out
and work more, which resulted in men doing some of the housework, like taking
care of their children and making meals. Dual-income families in the middle class
were the standard. The rate of singles, unmarried couples, and single-parent
households increased rapidly, and families were getting smaller.
And in this time food became a trend; especially cooking. Many
international food ingredients and spices came in, and had a huge impact on
Canada’s culinary industry.
“Yuppies” is a term used to describe those who are highly educated
professionals working in an urban environment. They made lots of money from a
young age. The amount of yuppies increased during the 80s.
Technology advancements
In this time technology was avansing and it was now used everyday by the
middle class and high class. There were many new electronic companies such as
Apple, Microsoft and IBM, which made communication and work much easier.
And entertainment was introduced into the home with consoles like Atari 2600 and
nintendo. The internet was made to help with global communication and
connectivity. Mobile phones were made that were only really used for
communication. These advancements shaped how people lived, worked, and
connected with each other.
Social impacts
The social structure of the 1980s was very anti-right wing politics. There
were many protest movements that resulted in welfare. And with society being
very progressive many students force on women's rights and LGBTQ+.
The Declaration of the First Nations happened, and the Assembly of First
Nations formed in 1982. They were formed to make voices for First Nations people
in Canada. we recognized First Nations to be the first on the land, and it’s
originally their land. But with that, there still were residential schools, showing that
discrimination against the First Nations people continued.
Japanese Canadians finally got an apology from the federal government in
1988. $21,000 of Redress compensation was given to each survivor, with more
than $12 million provided to a community fund and human rights projects.
Immigration of Black Canadians were still struggling with discrimination
and racism. Even though the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was
written, they still continued to face challenges.
