HSE AWARENESS MESSAGE

No. 2021-020 May-2021

Three Simple Steps to Prevent Falls

‘Working at Height’ is an activity at an elevated location of more than
6 feet high from the working ground level including work at / near edge
from where a person can fall through an open surface in a floor
opening or hole / pit / excavation or through fragile surface or work
over water. Working at Height poses risk for serious injury or death if
worker(s) falls. Fall protection and the right equipment shall be
provided for the job including ladders, scaffolds and PPE’s.

STEP 1: PLAN AHEAD

1. Plan ahead for the specific task considering
- How will the job be done?
- What tasks are involved?
- What safety equipment is needed?
2. Consider all types of fall/trip hazards including openings such as
holes and fragile surfaces.
3. Any simultaneous work under or above the working area?
4. If personal safety harness is required, make sure rigid anchorage
point is available & must be capable of sustain the load.
5. Ensure Regular Housekeeping to keep worksite tidy
6. Also, plan on how safely tools and materials can be lifted onto
working area. (via. crane or gin wheel, etc.)

STEP 2: PROVIDE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT

1. There are different types of equipment (ladders, scaffolds, cherry
picker etc.) for different types of jobs.
2. If personal fall arrest systems are needed, make sure there is a
harness for each employee.
3. Make sure harnesses are fit, inspected and safe to use.

STEP 3: PROVIDE TRAINING

1. Train workers on proper setup and safe use of all equipment.
2. Provide training on specific equipment that will be used on each
job.
3. Provide training in hazard identification at worksite.
4. Provide training in the care and safe use of ladders, scaffolds, fall
protection systems and other equipment used on the job.

Always adhere to KOC HSE Procedures

KOC.SA.031 - Working at Height Procedure
KOC.SA.002 - Safe Control and Use of Scaffolding, Portable Ladders and Stepladders

Be extra careful while ‘Working at Height’ – Small complacency may be turn to Fatal
