Presentation of the Final Master’s Project
The Final Master’s Project (FMP) is based on the simulation of a project to be developed using
the openBIM approach, the methodologies, techniques and tools learned during the Master's,
which will allow participants to apply all the knowledge acquired. The FMP will be developed in
groups and will align with the training program's approach to multidisciplinary teamwork.

Collaborative learning is very important, as it reproduces the real conditions in which

professionals in the knowledge society develop. Working together, the group faces the
challenges of a true team effort, trying to blend their talents and personalities into an effective
unit.

The FMP consists of the elaboration of a hypothetical INFRA (infrastructure) BIM project
containing the following subjects:

a) Topography

b) Geometry

c) Earthworks

d) Drainage

e) GIS (geospatial data)

Road Project developed by MBCIVEN1122 students

Master’s in Global BIM Management in Civil Engineering and GIS / 2

The project developed by the students will result in the creation of a federated model of the
road and will follow these steps:

a) The project will start with the topography of the land that will be delivered at the
beginning of the course. For this, students will use the knowledge of the master’s Block 2 |
Data collection for infrastructure projects and GIS.

b) In the next stage of the project, the modeling of the road will be carried out, which will
have horizontal elements such as tangents, spirals and curves. For that, students will use the
knowledge of the master’s Block 3 | BIM for Infrastructure Projects, in particular, topics
related to geometry and earthworks projects.

c) Continuing the development of the project, a thalweg culvert type hydraulic passage and
GIS data will be stipulated in the road layout, which will be modeled as shown in Module 5,
about drainage and previous project modules.

Project Description

The FMP is a linear project to put into practice all the knowledge learned.

It involves the layout of a road located near the A27 between Brighton and Lewes in the United
Kingdom (UK) of at least 2 km, which will include cuttings, embankments, drainage works
(longitudinal and transverse). This land/location is located near existing infrastructure but is
largely underdeveloped.

The Final Master's Project is mandatory and requires a minimum of 50% for approval. There is
no reassessment for this module.

Objectives and competences

The main objective of the Final Master's Project is to apply the knowledge acquired throughout
the program and to have the ability to work collaboratively, with a customer-oriented approach
and through the use of different technologies and tools within the scope of standardized
methodologies, used globally.

It is expected that the participant through this FMP will also be able to communicate their
conclusions - and the knowledge and final reasons that support them - to specialized and
non-specialized audiences, in a clear and unambiguous way.

The aim is, on the one hand, to demonstrate how an openBIM workflow can develop an
integrated project producing all the deliverables of a real Build Project and how it improves
project development compared to traditional methods. On the other hand, this exercise
becomes a suitable scenario to simulate the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) throughout the
project life cycle, allowing the role of the owner, in our case performed by the designated
Mentor, to interact with the entire team from the beginning, exchanging information and
feedback every cycle. To achieve this objective, the participant will adopt the management of

Master’s in Global BIM Management in Civil Engineering and GIS / 3

this project using agile methodologies, planning its cycles according to the roadmap and
milestones required for the Final Master’s Project.

The FMP comprises a set of deliverables and a final presentation of the work performed,
followed by its public presentation before an evaluation committee designated for this purpose.

The objectives of this master's degree final project are:

● To learn how to develop a real project from the beginning and with a working team.
● Identify the requirements of a project and know how to deal with them.
● Acquire the knowledge to develop a model using BIM methodology.
● To learn how to develop all the documentation and workflows of the BIM methodology
necessary in the development of a civil works project.

The linked competencies are as follows:

● Learn about the importance of applying open, standardized data in response to customer
information requirements (appointing party, ISO 19650).
● Use innovative and consistent tools and methodologies to solve a construction project in a
collaborative and multidisciplinary way.
● Implement customer-oriented project management techniques such as agile
methodologies.
● Simulate an IPD (Integrated Project Delivery).
● Understand the importance of the asset owner and manager as the ultimate beneficiary of
BIM.
● Adopt the implementation of the openBIM approach, using buildingSMART standards such
as IFC, MVD and BCF.
● Learn to work collaboratively and globally, facing different time zones and cultural
approaches.
● Understand the importance of the Information Requirements and how to create the
appropriate response throughout the creation and updating of the BIM execution plan.
● Learning to make design decisions with other stakeholders operating at different stages of
the lifecycle.
● Use BIM authoring modeling and management tools in the context of project development.
● Adopt interoperability between different software platforms, through the use of open
standards (for example: IFC, MVD, BCF, COBie, gbXML, …)
● Learn to calculate the construction cost and plan its execution using open standards as a
reference and source of information.
● Understand the need to develop different Information Models for each of the different
stages of the lifecycle.

Teaching Methodology
Design
The Final Master's Project will be developed in groups of 5 or 6 participants and will align with
the approach of the training program in a multidisciplinary team. For the development of this
design, the participants must complete the deliveries of the different stages of a real design
that corresponds to the training program:

• PHASE 1: Design

• PHASE 2: Construction

• PHASE 3: Maintenance and Operation

Team Members roles

Each member of the group will have different roles, in relation to the phase they are involved in.

This Master's Degree brings the possibility of learning to apply agile methodologies in order to
create a clear and customer-oriented strategy, participants will assemble their groups,
distinguishing two main areas: Project Management and Development.

Due to the limited number of participants, there are two roles which must be combined in one
person: Product Owner and BIM Manager on the one hand, and Scrum Master and BIM
Coordinator on the other.

The other members will be managers. The participant will assume responsibility for each role/s
as defined in the BEP.

Master’s in Global BIM Management in Civil Engineering and GIS / 5

Team members roles

Owner (Mentor)

The mentor will be an element of support and guidance throughout the project from the
perspective of the BIM collaborative practices rather than technical aid due to the different
expertise fields embedded in this project. However, the mentor’s role should not replace the
initiative, effort and self-learning of the participants as it happens in the professional reality.

Product Owner / BIM Manager:

Responsible for contracts management, plays the role of connection between the client and the
internal execution team. In real life this role has a strategic position.

Scrum Master and BIM coordinator

Responsible for organizing customer demands into achievable goals for the team and directly
coordinating the action of the execution team.

Design Manager

In the FMP, the student will be responsible for managing and coordinating the Design discipline
modeling.

Master’s in Global BIM Management in Civil Engineering and GIS / 6

Construction Manager

In the FMP, the student will be responsible for managing and coordinating the Construction
discipline modeling.

Operation Manager

In the FMP, the student will be responsible for managing and coordinating the Operations and
Maintenance elements.

*Note: In the FMP dynamics, it is important to remember that the division of tasks/roles in the
team must change from the first to the second Group Set ups.

Information requirements, quality criteria and development process

This project will be developed in accordance with the requirements set by the submitted EIR and
module assignments. This means that participants must prepare the different deliverables
following the indications provided by each of the teachers in the module taught. This
circumstance ensures the continued development of the FMP in accordance with the Master's
program structure.

MASTER’S BLOCKS

BLOCK 1: BIM MANAGEMENT

BLOCK 2: DATA COLLECTION FOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS AND GIS

BLOCK 3: BIM FOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

BLOCK 4: CONSTRUCTION OF INFRASTRUCTURE IN BIM

BLOCK 5: MAINTENANCE OF INFRASTRUCTURE IN BIM

BLOCK 6: FINAL MASTER’S PROJECT

Every group has to use different BIM authoring tools (Civil 3D, Infraworks, OpenRoads, Revit,
GIS tools etc.) to demonstrate skills in the BIM process.

BLOCK 1: BIM MANAGEMENT

In the “BIM MANAGEMENT” block, the students will create the Project Stages Strategies and
the Sprint planning proposal, as they learned in the module “OpenBIM and Collaboration
Practices”.

Master’s in Global BIM Management in Civil Engineering and GIS / 7

Once this is done, they will create the first version of the Plan of BIM Execution (BEP) as
required in the teamwork task of the module "Data Management".

When this phase is reached, they will begin to develop the PIM as a BIM Project team,
distinguishing, as mentioned earlier, the different roles required in the Team Member Roles.

measurements during construction.

BLOCK 5: MAINTENANCE OF INFRASTRUCTURE IN BIM

This Block aims to present the best practices for managing BIM assets for the conservation of
roads.

Mentoring and Guidance

The students will be accompanied by a mentor throughout the development of the FMP.

Monitoring the work is based on the relationship between the teams and their mentor. General
supervision of the process of elaboration of the different works will be guaranteed throughout
the course.

Orientation sessions are mandatory for all groups. The development of 10 sessions of 1 hour
each is guided, to be held on days established by the mentor at appropriate times for team
members.

In these sessions, participants will explain to their mentor the progress made with the project
and the questions raised from the perspective of collaborative practice. Specific technical
doubts must be resolved within the scope of the different teamwork tasks of the groups. But
the main purpose is to allow the mentor to guide the participant's work, based on the status of
the work at the date of the session.

Master’s in Global BIM Management in Civil Engineering and GIS / 11

The mentors will guide and support their groups throughout the project in terms of organization
and complying with the EIR rather than technical assistance, due to the different areas of
expertise incorporated in this project. Bear in mind that the mentor's role should not replace the
participants' initiative, effort, and self-learning.

Depending on the characteristics of the issues raised, some may require the mentor to consult
experts in the area in which they are not experts, but considering that most of these technical
issues should already be progressively resolved during the development of each of the modules'
teamwork assignments during the programme.

Mentors will assess the team's participation in each mentoring session and the level of
compliance within each deliverable.

The evaluation system also includes an additional rubric. Its aim is to highlight the FMP
individual Participation. The FMP evaluation system provides a teamwork assessment, in which
all the participants provide a collaborative effort, each one from their own team member roles,
towards a shared goal: The Project delivery.

In that sense, the following additional rubric contributes to assessing individual participation,
ensuring there are no unfair effects for the rest of the team:
