MBCIVEN 0524 M11 Syllabus
MBCIVEN 0524 M11 Syllabus
MODULE 11:
The FMP consists of the elaboration of a hypothetical INFRA (infrastructure) BIM project
containing the following subjects:
a) Topography
b) Geometry
c) Earthworks
d) Drainage
a) The project will start with the topography of the land that will be delivered at the
beginning of the course. For this, students will use the knowledge of the master’s Block 2 |
Data collection for infrastructure projects and GIS.
b) In the next stage of the project, the modeling of the road will be carried out, which will
have horizontal elements such as tangents, spirals and curves. For that, students will use the
knowledge of the master’s Block 3 | BIM for Infrastructure Projects, in particular, topics
related to geometry and earthworks projects.
c) Continuing the development of the project, a thalweg culvert type hydraulic passage and
GIS data will be stipulated in the road layout, which will be modeled as shown in Module 5,
about drainage and previous project modules.
Project Description
The FMP is a linear project to put into practice all the knowledge learned.
It involves the layout of a road located near the A27 between Brighton and Lewes in the United
Kingdom (UK) of at least 2 km, which will include cuttings, embankments, drainage works
(longitudinal and transverse). This land/location is located near existing infrastructure but is
largely underdeveloped.
The Final Master's Project is mandatory and requires a minimum of 50% for approval. There is
no reassessment for this module.
It is expected that the participant through this FMP will also be able to communicate their
conclusions - and the knowledge and final reasons that support them - to specialized and
non-specialized audiences, in a clear and unambiguous way.
The aim is, on the one hand, to demonstrate how an openBIM workflow can develop an
integrated project producing all the deliverables of a real Build Project and how it improves
project development compared to traditional methods. On the other hand, this exercise
becomes a suitable scenario to simulate the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) throughout the
project life cycle, allowing the role of the owner, in our case performed by the designated
Mentor, to interact with the entire team from the beginning, exchanging information and
feedback every cycle. To achieve this objective, the participant will adopt the management of
The FMP comprises a set of deliverables and a final presentation of the work performed,
followed by its public presentation before an evaluation committee designated for this purpose.

● Learn to calculate the construction cost and plan its execution using open standards as a
reference and source of information.
● Understand the need to develop different Information Models for each of the different
stages of the lifecycle.
• PHASE 1: Design
• PHASE 2: Construction
This Master's Degree brings the possibility of learning to apply agile methodologies in order to
create a clear and customer-oriented strategy, participants will assemble their groups,
distinguishing two main areas: Project Management and Development.
Due to the limited number of participants, there are two roles which must be combined in one
person: Product Owner and BIM Manager on the one hand, and Scrum Master and BIM
Coordinator on the other.
The other members will be managers. The participant will assume responsibility for each role/s
as defined in the BEP.
Owner (Mentor)
The mentor will be an element of support and guidance throughout the project from the
perspective of the BIM collaborative practices rather than technical aid due to the different
expertise fields embedded in this project. However, the mentor’s role should not replace the
initiative, effort and self-learning of the participants as it happens in the professional reality.
Responsible for contracts management, plays the role of connection between the client and the
internal execution team. In real life this role has a strategic position.
Responsible for organizing customer demands into achievable goals for the team and directly
coordinating the action of the execution team.
Design Manager
In the FMP, the student will be responsible for managing and coordinating the Design discipline
modeling.
In the FMP, the student will be responsible for managing and coordinating the Construction
discipline modeling.
Operation Manager
In the FMP, the student will be responsible for managing and coordinating the Operations and
Maintenance elements.
*Note: In the FMP dynamics, it is important to remember that the division of tasks/roles in the
team must change from the first to the second Group Set ups.
MASTER’S BLOCKS
Every group has to use different BIM authoring tools (Civil 3D, Infraworks, OpenRoads, Revit,
GIS tools etc.) to demonstrate skills in the BIM process.
In the “BIM MANAGEMENT” block, the students will create the Project Stages Strategies and
the Sprint planning proposal, as they learned in the module “OpenBIM and Collaboration
Practices”.
When this phase is reached, they will begin to develop the PIM as a BIM Project team,
distinguishing, as mentioned earlier, the different roles required in the Team Member Roles.
Block 2 aims to manipulate geospatial data, by capturing reality, aiming at the analysis and
manipulation of topographic surfaces.
Block 3 aims to develop the road design and for that, 5 subjects will be developed (Topography,
Geometry, Earthworks, Drainage and GIS) using different BIM authoring tools. This circumstance
involves the use of the openBIM approach and a consistent interoperability strategy, which must
be properly defined in the BEP.
Geometry
Project Earthworks
This Block aims to implement the VDC (Virtual Design Construction), the elaboration of the 4D
BIM Planning, the creation of the Budget (BIM 5D) in addition to the monitoring of
measurements during construction.
This Block aims to present the best practices for managing BIM assets for the conservation of
roads.
Monitoring the work is based on the relationship between the teams and their mentor. General
supervision of the process of elaboration of the different works will be guaranteed throughout
the course.
Orientation sessions are mandatory for all groups. The development of 10 sessions of 1 hour
each is guided, to be held on days established by the mentor at appropriate times for team
members.
In these sessions, participants will explain to their mentor the progress made with the project
and the questions raised from the perspective of collaborative practice. Specific technical
doubts must be resolved within the scope of the different teamwork tasks of the groups. But
the main purpose is to allow the mentor to guide the participant's work, based on the status of
the work at the date of the session.
Depending on the characteristics of the issues raised, some may require the mentor to consult
experts in the area in which they are not experts, but considering that most of these technical
issues should already be progressively resolved during the development of each of the modules'
teamwork assignments during the programme.
Mentors will assess the team's participation in each mentoring session and the level of
compliance within each deliverable.

● Delivery package and drawings 2D: the format will be CAD and PDF. (uploaded on the
BIMsync platform)
● Project Information Model (PIM) and Asset Information Model (AIM) submission: Every
time the BIM model needs to be submitted, the formats will be IFC4 using the proper
MVD (uploaded on the BIMsync platform) and also the Native format in which that
specific model or part of the model was developed. Participants will finally upload the
files to the PUBLISHED and ARCHIVED containers in our CDE platform (BIMsync).
● BEP and supplementary documents: Participants will create and regularly update the
BIM execution plan (using Plannerly) and also submit supplementary documents in the
appropriate attachments (uploaded on the CANVAS platform). They will zip their file
structure into a *.zip or *.rar, using the following naming convention for this zipped folder
only.
● Participants will upload/upload the files, using the following naming convention for this
zipped folder only ( .zip):

given individually.
Evaluation System
The evaluation criteria consider the following aspects:
a) 2D documentation package:
Documentation will be evaluated as a deliverable to any client or private organization
that is intended to receive an actual architectural project deliverable. The quality of
the drawings, clarity and precision to convey the intended information.
b) Project Information Model (PIM):
Accuracy of modeling and implementing standards for each submission. Level of
geometry and information precision, following the criteria established by the BEP.
c) BIM management documentation (BEP, etc…):
This will be evaluated in accordance with models accuracy, as well as its alignment
with the standards knowledge provided during the Master.
d) Online defense:
Ability to present and summarize the process of the FMP.
The weight in the final grade according to each delivery follows the distribution below:
In that sense, the following additional rubric contributes to assessing individual participation,
ensuring there are no unfair effects for the rest of the team:
Important:
- Late delivery Policy does not apply to the Final Master Project.
- The reassessment doesn’t apply to the Final Master Project. That is, if the student obtains a
grade lower than 50%, he/she will not be able to do another activity to improve the grade.
