CHINMAYA VIDYALAYA ANNA NAGAR

III – TERMINAL WORKSHEET- 1( 2022-23)

CLASS VII -ENGLISH

I. Read the following comprehension passage

A 92 year -old lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock with perfect
make up, even though she is blind, moved to an old age home. Her husband recently
passed away. She didn’t even have children too. After many hours of waiting patiently
in the lobby she smiled sweetly when she was ready. She was provided a visual
description of her tiny room.

“l love it,” stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year old having just been presented
with a new puppy.

“But………but Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room, ” said the attendant. “That
doesn’t have anything to do with it,’ she replied. “Happiness is something you decide,
I have already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning I wake up. I can
spend the day in bed, recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that
don’t work. , or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift,
and as long as I am alive l’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve
stored away, just for this time in my life. ‘The attendant was touched by the elderly
woman’s sense of cheer and boundless enthusiasm.

I. On the basis of the reading of the passage, answer the questions

in?

3) What resolution did she make when she woke up every morning?

4) What does the story tell about the old woman?

2. From the passage find out the one word substitute for the following words

3. Find the antonym of the following words from the passage:

1) Whole

2) dead

II. Read the following comprehension passage

We can probably all agree that it is good to be kind, moral to be kind, nice to be kind,
but does it lead to success in life? After all, isn’t kindness about putting other people’s
interests first? Doesn’t it require self-sacrifice?

Yet consider these well-known people: James Timpson, boss of the Timpson chain of
shoe repairers; Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand; and Gareth
Southgate, one of the most successful managers that the England men’s football team
has ever had. All three of them are clearly “winners” in their fields, and yet all put
kindness at the heart of their strategies for success.

What they have found is that taking a more compassionate and apparently “softer”
approach to business, politics and sports management brings positive results, not just
for the benefit of people who work for them, but for their own benefit too. The
traditional notion that you have to be ruthless, driven and focussed on number one if
you want to achieve success is being discredited

There’s a growing body of scientific evidence that kind people can be winners. In
2020 I was part of a team at the University of Sussex which carried out the biggest
study of its kind on public attitudes to kindness. More than 60,000 people from 144
countries chose to fill in an extensive questionnaire called The Kindness Test which
was launched on the radio shows I present – All in the Mind on BBC Radio 4 and
Health Check on the BBC World Service.

When asked where people saw the most acts of kindness happening, the workplace did
rather well, coming third after home and medical setting both as a place where people
witnessed kind acts and where kindness was truly valued. So, a place that might have
the reputation as cut-throat and impersonal, where people compete for positions, is
home to more empathy and consideration than you might think.

III. Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

I was the kid who sat on the side-lines and watched others having a good time
splashing about in the sea, wishing I could swim. Eventually, I learned how to, the
hard way. My brothers threw me into the water. As I floundered and nearly drowned,
it didn’t occur to me then that my brothers had taught me two important skills:
survival and independence. These skills were gifts that I relied on numerous times
over as an adult. As a child, I was game for anything.

Nothing fascinated me more than the chance to try something new. If nothing else, my
curiosity was fuelled by the desire to test my limits. I was sixteen when I climbed my
first mountain. It was Gunung Ledang in Johor, Malaysia, in 1980. It was a horrible
experience. I found the heat and thickness of the jungle overwhelming. The night
spent on the summit was cold and lonely. As I lay in my tent, with my knees curled to
my chin, I vowed that I would never climb another mountain.

And yet, ironically, I was one of the two climbers from the first Singapore Mount
Everest Expedition who summitted Mount Everest in May 1998.
