4.0 Module - Probabilty Basic Concept
NAJE
The concept of probability was first
systematically studied in the 17th century by
Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat. They laid
the foundation for probability theory while
solving a gambling problem posed by the
French nobleman Chevalier de Méré.
PROBABILITY – is a field of mathematics that deals
with chance.
Probability as a general concept can be defined as
the chance of an event occurring.
EXPERIMENT – a probability of experiment is a
chance process that leads to well
defined outcomes.
Examples: Tossing a coin and rolling a die
OUTCOME – is a result of a single trial of a
probability experiments.
EVENT – an event can consist of more than one
outcome, or an event is a set of happening
or outcomes.
SIMPLE EVENT – is an event with only one possible
outcome.
COMPOUND EVENT –consists of two or more
simple events or outcomes.
SAMPLE SPACE – is the set of all possible
outcomes of an experiment.
➢In statistics, probability is not
only expressed in words but in
quantitative numbers which
may be in decimal, in percent,
or in fraction.
➢ The value of probability ranges from
zero to one.
➢ A probability of zero indicates that
there is no chance at all that an event
will happen or occur.
➢ A probability of one indicates
absolute certainly that an event will
happen.
SAMPLE SPACE = set of all EVENT = is a set of happening
possible outcome or outcomes.
Prime numbers are
numbers greater than
1 that only have two
Composite numbers defined factors, 1 and the
as any positive numbers that number itself.
have more than two factors.
ACTIVITY:
1. Experiment : Rolling a die , list the sample space and events.
a. the event that a 3 will occur.
b. the event that odd number will occur.
c. the event that 3 and 6 will occur.
d. the event that 1,2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 will occur.
e. the event that 7 will occur.
2. Experiment : Tossing a coin , list the sample space(S) and events(E).
a. the event of getting a tail.
b. the event of getting a head.
3. Experiment : Tossing a 4 coins , list the sample space(S) and
events(E).
a. events all head will occur
b. events all tail will occur
c. events at least 1head will occur
d. events at least 1 tail will occur
