Chinese Music

In this lesson students will learn about the Chinese musical


instruments and the main features of Chinese music.

Learning Objectives:
* To understand the main features of Chinese traditional music.
* To learn the different types of musical instruments and how they are
played.
* To explore the musical elements of traditional Chinese music.

Introduction:
Music has been part of Chinese culture for over 9000 years. In ancient China, music was
performed at banquets or at ritual sacrifices. It was believed that music could purify people's
minds. Chinese traditional music is played on solo instruments or in small ensembles, there are
plucked and bowed stringed instruments, flutes, and various cymbals, gongs, and drums.

Types of instruments:
Chinese musical instruments are traditionally grouped into eight categories known as bā yīn (八
音). The eight categories are stone, earth, bamboo, metal, skin, silk, wood and gourd.

Write down what material(s) these instruments are made out of and how the sounds
are being produced.
