YEAR 10 CAREERS: Career Investigation


Task: Investigate one career you may be interested in pursuing.

The key information on your chosen career will need to be presented visually
(PowerPoint/Prezi/Keynote).

Base your investigation on the following headings (and questions):

1. Description of the work


 Describe the tasks involved in this job; are you reasonably independent in deciding how to do
the day’s work or does someone else plan and supervise it for you?
 How difficult is the work (physically, mentally, emotionally)?
 What sort of people will you come into contact with?

2. Working Conditions and Environment


 Where would you work (eg. Office, factory, outdoors)?
 What equipment is provided? What would you have to provide?
 Usual hours?
 What annual holidays are available? What other types of leave are available – sick leave,
maternity leave?
 The Wage/Salary
 Are there any special benefits of work in this job (company car etc)?

3. Personal attributes and skills


 What personal attributes do you need to have or to develop to be able to do this job (eg loyalty,
good personal presentation, adaptability, good people-skills)?
 What job-specific skills are needed for this job?
 List physical factors which are important for this job (eg physical strength, able to work at
heights)

4. Educational requirements
 What minimum educational level do you need to reach before you can enter this occupation?
 Are there any subjects that you need to do at Year 10, 11 and 12? List specific subjects.
 Can you enter the job straight from school or do you need further education?

5. Qualifications
 What education/training courses are necessary to become qualified in this occupation and where
are they offered? (include course, institution and location, length of course, cost of course and
financial assistance available)

6. Employment prospects
 Is it difficult to obtain employment in this occupation?
 What are the future prospects of work in this occupation (eg is the need for this work likely to
increase or decrease?)
 Is this job equally suited for people of all ages, or is it mainly suited for a particular age group?

7. Personal evaluation
 In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of this job for you?
 Do you think you are capable of doing this job?
 Do you think it would satisfy your personal values and work values? Explain
