Data can only be processed for one of the six reasons for lawful processing (1) which
prevents people from processing personal data without a valid reason (1)
data must be accurate / up to date (1) which ensures that incorrect information isn’t stored
(1).
Data must not be kept longer than necessary (1) which reduces the chance of the data
being misused (1).
Data cannot be transferred to other countries unless they can keep it protected (1) which
prevents the data being sent to countries that do not have as strict laws (1).

Inform people of data breaches within 72 hours (1) so that they are aware and can act on
the information (1).
Data stored securely (1) to make it harder for hackers to gain access to it (1)
the right to view data (1) allows people to check their data is stored correctly / what data is
stored about them (1).
Consent is required (1) which gives people control over whether their personal data can be
used (1).
Right to withdraw consent (1) allows people to change their mind and stop their data being

4.​ A software company has produced some software for other manufacturing companies to
use. The software will be used to control machinery.

Proprietary software
The manufacturing companies only get the compiled files (1) so cannot see the original
source code (1) which means they won’t be able to see any ingenious solutions that
were used (1).
A fee can be charged for the licence (1) either as a one off payment or subscription (1).
Money made from the sale of the software can pay for free support (1).
The company can sell new versions of the software (1) which keeps regular income (1)
money from the sale of software (1) can fund further development (1)​
as software is purchased (1) the company can afford to make sure that it is secure /
won’t damage any machinery in the manufacturing company (1).
Open source
This software provides the source code to the software (1). Although normally open
source software is free (1) it is possible to make a charge for it (1).
The company could fund the cost of producing the software by charging for support (1)
and further / custom development (1).
As the code is open source, the customers can view it (1) and check for security risks
(1)
The customers are able to modify the code (1) so they can improve it / customise it (1)
the licence may require that changes made are fed back to all other customers (1) in
which case all customers benefit from modifications (1).
