Life and Practical Skills

• Unit One: Life Skills: Definition and Importance

Dear student, do you know what a skill is?

Is it something that can be acquired and developed?

What are life skills? Do you consider life skills important for you?

What should I do to develop my critical thinking skills? How do I

develop self-awareness? Is it important to work on enhancing a positive
self-concept? Why should I control my anger and manage my sources of
stress? Should I, as a university student, make decisions and take
responsibility for them? Why is it necessary for me to set goals and
manage my time effectively? What are my responsibilities toward the
community I belong to? How is respecting individual differences and
gender roles essential in life?

How can I develop my skills in my favorite hobby? Can I turn this hobby
into a future profession? What basic skills might help me secure a job that
meets my ambitions in a competitive job market? How do I effectively
deal with the fast-paced demands and challenges of life?
These and many other questions that come to the minds of an ambitious
generation full of energy and dreams call for us to pause, reflect, and
seriously consider developing university education to meet the needs of
conscious youth and help them make decisions that determine their future
life paths.

What is meant by life skills?

The World Health Organization defines life skills as "the ability to adapt
and engage in positive behavior that enables individuals to deal
effectively with the demands and challenges of daily life." UNICEF, on
the other hand, defines them as "the change or development in behavior
that seeks to achieve balance in three areas: knowledge, attitudes, and
skills."

Learning life skills is significantly important in improving cognitive

skills, mental health, and the efficiency of youth in facing contemporary
life challenges. The importance of learning these skills lies in their impact
on health, social interaction, preventing drug abuse, dealing with violence
or abuse of any form and degree, and preventing suicidal thoughts during
crises. The impact of learning life skills extends to academic
achievement, environmental awareness, increasing individuals' income,
and encouraging positive change and advancement.

Key life skills emphasized by the World Health Organization and

UNICEF include problem-solving, critical thinking, effective
communication skills, decision-making, creative thinking, social
communication skills, self-awareness, empathy, and coping with
psychological stress, as well as emotional intelligence. An individual
must understand their strengths and weaknesses to recognize available
opportunities to prepare for potential risks. This is followed by
developing social awareness and concern for family and community, and
attempting to solve individual problems by discovering alternatives and
balancing pros and cons, which facilitates reaching logical solutions.

How do we effectively use life skills?

- The goal of learning these skills should be to change behaviors and

practices, not just theoretical knowledge or shifting attitudes.

- Traditional teaching methods based on acquiring information alone are

not sufficient to bring about the desired changes in attitudes and
behaviors.

- Learners should engage in practical experience related to the skills they

are learning, allowing them to directly practice them.

- Repetition and revision are necessary to reinforce learning.

- Utilizing life skills is beneficial when they are linked to accessing

services, information, and contributing to community advancement.
