TEST 1 - 2023
13 Questions

Instructions to students.

1. There will be no negative marking for the test

2. Please pay careful attention when you are asked to round a question, if you round
incorrectly your answer will be marked wrong. Accuracy is important in this course

3. When it comes to monetary values and you are asked to round to the nearest rand
, there you be no decimals/points in your answer. Example 5678,42 rounded to the
nearest rand is 5678

4. When you are asked to round to the nearest cent, there should be 2 numbers after the
decimal point. Example 456,6758 should be 456,68. You can use either a comma (,)
or a point (.) for your answers

5. If you are not asked to round any values then enter the answer as it is without any
spaces. Example 5 will be 5

Question 1
An owner of a gift shop notes that when the price of a particular item is R102, then 1250
of the items will be sold. However she also observes that the demand for this item decreases
by seven items every time the price is increased by R11.

If x is the number of times the price is increased by R11, then the total revenue from the
sale of this particular item can be modelled by the function R(x) = ax2 + bx + c.

The coefficients, a, b and c have the following values:

a= ,b= and c= .

Question 2
During a pandemic, a country’s vaccination drive results in a exponential decrease in the
number of new daily infections; from 20000 new cases recorded on the 1st April, to 1100 new
infections recorded on the 1st June of the same year.

If the function, y = y0 ekt , is used to model the decrease in the new daily infections, where
y is the number of new daily infections recorded t months after the 1st April, then:

1. Calculate the value of the growth constant k, expressed as a number rounded to four
decimal places and

2. Use the model with the unrounded value of k to calculate the rate of change in the
daily infections, rounded to the nearest whole number, on the 1st June, rounded to
the nearest whole number.

(1) = and (2)= .

2
Question 3
2x3 + 3x2 − 18x − 40
The limit lim ,
x→∞ 20 − x − x2

(a) does not exist.

(b) is equal to −2.

1
(c) is equal to .
10
(d) is equal to −40.

(e) is equal to 0.

Question 4
The total profit from the production and sale of x items of a product is given by the function
256
P (x) = √ − 10 rands.
x
When 16 items are produced and sold, the rate of change in the total profit is
R rands per item (rounded to the nearest rand).

Question 5

The derivative of the function f (x) = 3x2 + 4x + 3 is equal to:

(a) f ′ (x) = (3x + 2)(3x2 + 4x + 3)−1/2 .

(b) f ′ (x) = (3x + 2)(3x2 + 4x + 3)−1/2 .

1
(c) f ′ (x) = (6x + 4)−1/2 .
2

(d) f ′ (x) = 6x + 4.

(e) f ′ (x) = (3x2 + 4x + 3)−1/2 .

Question 6
The derivative of the function y = (5x − 1)(1 − 2x)2 is equal to:

dy
(a) = −2(5x − 1)(9x − 2)
dx
dy
(b) = −8(5x − 1)(2x − 3)
dx
dy
(c) = −3(1 − 2x)(10x − 3)
dx
dy
(d) = −20(5x − 1)(1 − 2x)
dx
dy
(e) = −2(2x + 3)(1 − 2x)
dx

Question 7
The total cost of producing x items is given by the function

C(x) = 10(e0,01x + 5).

The marginal average cost, rounded to the nearest cent, when four items are produced, is
equal to rands per item.

Question 8
