INDIAN ETHOS AND PERSONALITY
DEVELOPMENT

MEANING OF INDIAN ETHOS:

• Indian Ethos in Management refers to the values and practices that the
culture of India (Bharatheeya Sanskriti) can contribute to service,
leadership and management. These values and practices are rooted in
Sanathana Dharma (the eternal essence), and have been influenced by
various strands of Indian philosophy.

• Attempts have been made to distill aspects related to management theory


and practice from various texts of India. A variety of works has
influenced this area and few of them include Autobiography of a
Yogi, Thirukkural, Mahabharatha, Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita.

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF INDIAN ETHOS IN


MANAGEMENT :

1) KNOW YOURSELF:

Who are you? All of us are part of supreme power (GOD) &
hence all of us have all the divine qualities like integrity, patience, courage,
loyalty, forgiveness, service attitude i.e. mind you try to develop our self by
improving our qualities we will not only make our self happy but also the
society be live in.
2) INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT:

Sacrificing spirit rather than fighting spirit.


Team achievement rather than individual achievement. Spiritual attainment
rather than material prosperity. Self control rather than outside control.

3) SELF MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT :

Karma Yoga is a good pathway for– self purification


and self-development, individual as well as collective growth and welfare,
minimum play of passion, jealousy, hatred, greed, anger and arrogance, team
spirit, teamwork, autonomous management, minimum control and supervision,
etc.

4) HOLISTIC APPROACH TO LIFE :


Holistic approach in Management is based on spiritual
principle of unity, oneness, non-dual or Advaita concept. Holistic approach in
Management is based on spiritual principle of unity,. These represents divine
wealth.

5) SEWA OR SERVICE ATTITUDE :

The person should have altitude of service providing & at the same
time have happy face i.e. smile on face.eg: organization should be service
oriented & not profit oriented, provide best possible service to your entire
customer.

6) SELF SACRIFICE :

Self sacrifice refers to sacrifice of self ego. We should be ready to


sacrifice for others.

7) TEAM SPIRIT :

Treat work as YAJNA – together i.e. T- Together E- Everyone,

8) PRESENT MOMENT :

Think only about ;


a) What is there in front of you at present?
b) We cannot change the past or predict future.
c) So have total focus & dedication present in situation.
d) Do not take unnecessary stress of work, take it as a play.

 VALUE :

Beliefs about what is right and wrong and what is important in life .

 HUMAN VALUES :

TRUTHFULNESS - As individuals, being truthful means that we can


grow and mature, learning from our mistakes. For society, truthfulness makes
social bonds, and lying and hypocrisy break them.

INTERGRITY - Integrity is the quality of having strong ethical or


moral principles and following them at all times, no matter who's watching. A
person with integrity acts with honesty, honor, and truthfulness.
GRATITUDE - Gratitude is one of many positive emotions. It's
about focusing on what's good in our lives and being thankful for the things we
have.

FEATURES :

 BALANCE OR EQUILIBRIUM - Balance or equilibrium is a stable


state of Indian thought, i.e., balance between desire and desire
lessness, spiritual and secular values, subjective and materialistic
world. Divinity of Human Being: Indian ethos focuses on the
existence of human being as truth.
 DIVINITY OF HUMAN BEING - Divinity of human beings is not
merely a notion but a truth which can be experienced.
 BALANCE OF PERSONAL AND WORK LIFE -Indian ethos for work
life ; Tesham Sukhm Tesham Shanti Shaswati: Infinite happiness
and infinite peace come to them who see the Divine in all.
 IMPORTANCE TO CHARACTER - Sacrificing spirit rather than
fighting spirit. Team achievement rather than individual
achievement. Spiritual attainment rather than material prosperity.

 COSMIC OR PURE CONSCIOUSNESS - Business ethos
principles practiced by Indian Companies ... It is a matter of
attitude, approach and level of management consciousness.
 WHOLE-MAN APPROACH - Whole-Man Approach: Indian ethos
is based on Indian scripture like-Shruties of Gita and Upanishad
and Smruties of Puranas. Indian thought provides the whole-man
approach through knowledge of creation, cosmos and internal
relation between spiritual and materialistic life.
PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT :
 MEANING :

 Personality refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns


of thinking, feeling and behaving.
 The study of personality focuses on two broad areas: One is
understanding individual differences in particular personality
characteristics, such as sociability or irritability.
 When we say that someone has a "good personality" we mean
that they are likable, interesting and pleasant to be with.

PHYSICAL LOOKS :

• The study suggested that physical appearance alone could send


signals about their true personality. "As we predicted, physical
appearance serves as a channel through which personality is

 MEANING :

Essentially, personality is referred to as the combination


of values, views, set responses, patterns of thought and
characteristics which are relatively stable aspects of an individual.
Behaviour on the other hand, is how that individual comes across to
others in their actions.

 TYPES :

A study on human behavior has revealed that 90% of the


population can be classified into four basic personality
types: Optimistic, Pessimistic, Trusting and Envious.

Human personality is a complex area of study.Not


only is human nature complex, but also each individual has a
unique combination of inherent abilities and preferences and
